The Whispers of Time
The clock tower in the heart of New Zurich had just struck midnight when Alma Moreau realized she was being followed. The hum of hover cars in the distance was the only sound accompanying the click of her teal stiletto heels on the azure glass walkway. Her trench coat, a blend of metallic fabrics that shimmered under the moonlight, clung elegantly to her athletic frame. In 2055, fashion had taken on futuristic edges, but Alma maintained a hint of nostalgia with her attire—a reminder of past eras she had yet to explore but only read about.
She glanced over her shoulder, catching a brief glimpse of a shadowy figure darting behind the holographic advertisement pillars. Alma's heart raced as she swiftly turned into an alley, mist curling around her legs like an obedient pet. The city grid was a labyrinth she knew well—one wrong turn, however, and her pursuer could corner her.
The Revelation
Two nights before, Alma had discovered a peculiar file on her grandfather's old device, a relic from the late 20th century. Despite her profession as a chrono-journalist, specializing in digital archaeology of the early internet age, this was like nothing she had ever seen. The file contained encrypted notes referencing "Medcap’s Law" and an ambitious scheme to alter the digital currency trajectory—Bitcoin was to become an ancient currency dropped to its original value for one month in the past.
The notes were unfinished and cryptic. Alma's grandfather, a noted economist, had vanished under mysterious circumstances decades ago. What intrigued her most was the mention of a time portal, said to be hidden beneath the city's oldest subway station—abandoned for years after tech innovations rendered it obsolete. Could this be the reason behind his disappearance?
Into the Past
The alley spilled into the old subway entrance. Alma's suave fingers typed a passcode into her smartwatch, and the entrance doors hissed open. She hesitated briefly, remembering the countless warnings of time travel—how meddling could alter the fabric of reality. But her curiosity and the need to unravel her grandfather's mystery propelled her forward.
Once inside, the air was still and thick with the musty scent of forgotten memories. The arches loomed overhead, converging towards a central vortex, shimmering with an eerie glow. The figure was closing in—she had mere seconds. With a deep breath, Alma stepped into the portal.
The World That Once Was
When she opened her eyes, Alma found herself in a bustling marketplace, vibrant with sounds and smells alien to her advanced senses. Her surroundings were unmistakably dated—early 21st century, judging by the attire of the passersby. Men and women in varied shades of denim and cotton brushed past, seemingly oblivious to her presence.
For a moment, Alma stood bewildered, her trench coat now standing out like an anachronism amidst the crowd. A teenage boy with a skateboard under his arm gawked at her attire before running off, muttering about a "cosplay convention."
Alma needed to blend in, and fast. She stumbled into a thrift shop, emerging moments later in faded jeans and a graphic tee, the image of a forgotten rock band emblazoned across her chest. Her hair tied in a casual ponytail, Alma resumed her quest.
The Pursuit of Answers
She sought out Dr. Jules Fidel, a known associate of her grandfather. It was dusk by the time she found him in a cramped café, engrossed in weathered scientific texts spread before him. The aroma of freshly ground coffee filled the air as Alma cautiously approached the table.
"Dr. Fidel," she began, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her. The elderly man looked up, surprise flitting across his features only briefly before he motioned for her to sit.
"You're... Alphonse's granddaughter, aren't you?" His eyes held a glimmer of recognition.
Alma nodded, attempting to keep the myriad of questions at bay. "I need your help. My grandfather was working on something, something to do with Bitcoin and time travel."
A Code Worth Solving
Dr. Fidel leaned back, cautiously studying her expression. "He discovered a fundamental flaw in Medcap’s Law—a way to momentarily stabilize the exponential network growth by redirecting key digital transactions into past timelines." His eyes glinted with a mix of fear and admiration. "It's said his experiments were successful several times before he vanished."
Suddenly, a jarring commotion erupted outside, the sound of a pursuit echoing through the street. Alma's pursuer had found her. Dr. Fidel swiftly scribbled an address onto a napkin. "Find Philip—he knows more. But be careful, there are those who'd rather keep your grandfather's work buried."
Before she could utter a word of thanks, shadows crept ever closer, and Alma had no choice but to surrender to the chase once again. Her heart pounded as she dashed through the café's rear entrance, imagining what the future—and the past—held in store.
