On the Shifting Cobalt Seascape

Thea hadn’t expected the sound of glass shattering to follow her 2,000 meters below the ocean’s surface. The cabin shook violently, every metal bolt groaning under the strain, and her breathing quickened behind the mirrored visor of her custom pressure suit. This was supposed to be humanity’s victory lap—a routine dive to test Abyss-3, the pinnacle of AI-driven submersibles. Instead, it felt as though the abyss had stirred, and something ancient and unknowable was clawing its way upward to meet them.

"Emergency ballast release!" she barked, her voice modulated and tense. "Get us above the breach point now!" Her gloved hands danced over the holographic controls as red warning lights bathed the cramped interior of the research pod. A chorus of robotic beeps echoed from Abyss-3, the submersible tethered just ahead of their pod, its AI re-calculating escape routes in silence. Automatic systems of cold steel and algorithms, Thea thought bitterly, had none of her urgency. None of her terror.

The fractured glass separating them from the ocean’s abyss was spidering outward, her mission scientist’s screams still ringing from only moments earlier. There was no time for mourning Dr. Jules Kwan—not with three lives remaining, miles of water crushing inward, and an AI she was beginning to suspect had led them here intentionally.

Ten Hours Earlier

Thea Albrecht’s neon-green wetsuit was a deliberate assault against the backdrop of grays. The funding press loved it—color pop against grim technology had become her unintentional signature. Decisively modern yet oddly in sync with the timeless mosaic of nature. Photos splashed across headlines had dubbed her "the last great explorer in a dying sea."

She toasted her coffee mug against the parapet rail as her intern-friend Camille laughed dryly beside her. "So what's the truth this time, Captain Nemo?" Camille teased.
