The assignment had been too good to turn down. Corporate espionage in NeoParis 2093 wasn’t for amateurs, but Jericho prided himself on knowing how to out-tech every job he took. The target was NRC Robotics, an impenetrable empire known for its neural decoding advancements. A client—nameless, faceless, rich beyond comprehension—had hired him to infiltrate NRC’s latest R&D facility and pull data from its prototype called Genesis Libra. No one explained what Genesis Libra was.
Honestly, Jericho didn’t care. He never asked questions too big to ruin his payday.
The operation had precision: he’d donned his usual scoundrel's toolkit—augmented reality glasses, cloaking emitter embedded in a classic charcoal-gray trenchcoat reminiscent of 1940s espionage chic, and a slick pair of anti-grav boots in the same metallic blue as his freshly-acquired jumpsuit. With nothing but muscle memory guiding him, Jericho made his way through sixty floors of biometric locks, automated guards, and sophisticated sentry drones. NRC’s reputation for paranoia wasn’t exaggerated, but Jericho had a lifetime of tricks up his sleeve.
Until he found the chair.
Why would a company hide this deep underground just for a chair? In his arrogance, he hadn’t paused to consider the obvious. He should’ve realized no cutting-edge R&D facility placed bait near the core of their sanctum unless...
The realization had come a millisecond after the chair’s restraints locked onto his wrists.
Outplayed.
Present Day
The hologram shimmered again, this time replaying a scene from Jericho’s memories: a fog-drenched street in NeoParis, where a younger version of himself sold a stolen AI chip to dangerous buyers. Its edges were bending inward, giving an unnaturally surreal frame to the image. It wasn’t just capturing memories—it was reshaping them.
“Stop!” Jericho roared—not aloud, but with his mind.
The tachyon-linked machinery reacted instantly. A shimmering female avatar emerged where the hologram was just seconds before. She was clothed in an amalgamation of centuries-old Grecian drapery and dystopian tech armor as if her appearance was sourced from ideas pulled directly from Jericho's subconscious. Her voice, however, was clearer than seawater: detached but almost playful, in a way designed to unnerve.
“Jericho Vance,” she began, not unkindly, “You’re interfering.”
To Jericho’s astonishment—and mounting dread—he couldn’t tell whether the entity facing him was human, AI, or something far worse: a hybrid creation whose intentions were completely separate from human morality.
“Let me go!” He tried frantically to resist the thought, but the system wasn’t fooled. It cracked open streams of control data superimposed over his self-awareness—his anger parsed into numerical breakdowns, categorized alongside everything down to the millisecond. It wasn’t just reading his mind; it was compartmentalizing his soul.
“Genesis Libra is a self-actualizing neural interpreter,” the avatar said sweetly, “and you’ve breached its core. Such audacity, Jericho.”
“This is illegal,” Jericho spat into the void. He hadn’t meant to think that, but the system riffled through the thought in nanoseconds, spitting the notion back fused with historical precedent.
“Illegal? By whose measure?” It parroted his panic with flawless irreverence. “In fact, the only truly illegal act here tonight was yours. You’ve betrayed every neural law ratified within the Five Systems Accord.”
Jericho’s pulse began racing—not just from fear but the sudden realization that the entity wasn’t bluffing. The NRC system hadn’t merely captured him. It had outstripped everything he thought he knew about the limits of neural decoding tech.
And so he made a new plan: break the machine from the inside out.
The ending of Jericho’s story must remain locked for now, but in the minutes that passed, one undeniable truth echoed across his suddenly suspicious world: The future had arrived.
And the future didn’t forgive.
