The Shattered Past
Niko’s words from long ago echoed in her mind like a haunting refrain: "The only way to make it out here, Lyra, is to outsmart not just the universe but yourself."
She had been seventeen the first time she set foot on the colonist ship, her father's journal clutched tightly in her arms. It was an atlas of forgotten routes through the stars, promising wealth, knowledge, and secrets plucked from the remnants of humanity’s Golden Age. Lyra had learned quickly that space was an unrelenting abyss that granted nothing without a price. The Settlers’ Guild had raised her to be both hunter and prey, instilling in her a cunning that mirrored the galaxy's ceaseless hunger.
Her father’s artifact—a crystal-like shard said to contain the encoded memories of a people who no longer existed—was the only thing that kept her pressing forward through half a lifetime of betrayal, burned alliances, and blood. Tonight, that crystal was within reach—or so she thought.
A Duel Beneath the Crimson Canopy
The figure lunged without warning, slicing at the air where Lyra stood mere moments ago. The hum of the dagger slicing through bioluminescent spores filled the deadly silence that followed. Lyra twisted her body, drawing a compact plasma blade from her belt. The weapon hummed to life, its cerulean glow bathing her steely features. Her opponent's onyx armor absorbed the glow, making her a shadow that couldn’t seem to be clearly outlined.
"You should have stayed buried in the dust of Mars," said the warrior, her voice a deadly calm. "This isn’t your fight."
"It is now," Lyra replied, spinning low to slice at the woman’s legs. But the shadow-like warrior danced out of reach, retaliating with blinding speed. Their weapons clashed, the collision sparking arcs of energy that singed the ancient tree roots beneath them.
The combat was more than skill—it was a dance of life and death. Each movement was calculated, deliberate, yet suffused with raw emotion that neither combatant dared to fully reveal. Lyra parried high, ducking low to avoid a brutal counterstrike, and then rolled away to gain distance. Her chest heaved, but she held her composure.
"I should have known it was you, Mirage," Lyra spat. "All the trails... they led here."
“Of course,” Mirage replied with a smirk. Though her faceguard obscured her features, the malice in her voice was clear. "You always follow crumbs when you’re starving. That crystal belongs where it will never be found."
The Price of the Stars
As Mirage lunged once more, something primal surged in Lyra—not anger, not even fear, but the relentless determination of survival encoded in every Terran colonist who had clawed their way through extinction. She moved faster than Mirage expected, catching her opponent off-balance. A final, desperate slash sent the dagger clattering to the ground between them.
Without hesitation, Lyra crashed forward, pinning Mirage against the glowing roots. Her arm quivered as she held the plasma blade to Mirage's throat, its light reflecting coldly in Lyra's piercing teal eyes. "The crystal. Where?"
Mirage's laugh was unsettling, a mix of bile and relief. "Fools, all of you. The artifact isn't here. But it already knows you're coming."
The blood froze in Lyra’s veins as Mirage’s dagger exploded in a brilliant flash of light, forcing her to shield her face. When the light dimmed, Mirage was gone, leaving behind only silence—and the faint sound of something ticking.
An Ominous Revelation
Lyra staggered to her feet, her gaze scanning the corrupt beauty of the forest. Her breath was shallow, and her fingers trembled as they reached for the small beacon embedded in the folds of her utility belt. She activated the emergency tracker, signaling to Niko. "I’m fine," she said into the radio. "But Mirage got away."
The response crackled in her ear, tense and concerned. "Did she have it?"
"No," Lyra murmured. But as she peered into the pulsating shadows beyond the glowing flora, she couldn’t shake the sensation that something had been awakened here—something older and far more dangerous than she had anticipated.
A single shard of the forest’s crystalline bark broke beneath her boot as she moved forward, her heart heavy with both fear and wonder. The hunt wasn’t over; it had only just begun.
Somewhere in the distance, the forest whispered back to her—an ancient, unknowable sound that promised both salvation and ruin.
Lyra was ready to gamble with both.
