LIFE SIGNS: UNKNOWN.<\/strong> Behind her, the rookie, Kael, clutched his plasma cutter like a child gripping a toy.<\/p>\n

\"This isn\u2019t a salvage run,\" Isolde said, her voice crackling through the comms. \"That distress signal was a trap. Last time someone boarded the Eclipse<\/em>, they came back in pieces.\"<\/p>\n

Kael\u2019s breath hitched. \"Then why are we here?\"<\/p>\n

Isolde didn\u2019t answer. The ship\u2019s corridors were a graveyard of frozen corpses, their faces locked in silent screams. One body floated past, its chest cavity hollowed out\u2014not by weapons, but by something biting<\/em>. The HUD flashed again: BIOSIGNATURE DETECTED. 200 METERS AHEAD.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, in the darkness, Isolde\u2019s suit lamps cut through the void. The biosignal led them to the bridge\u2014where a single figure sat in the captain\u2019s chair, its back turned. Kael raised his cutter. \"Identify yourself!\"<\/p>\n

The chair rotated slowly. The figure wore Isolde\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\"Hello, sister,\" it said, its voice a perfect mimic. \"You took your time.\"<\/p>\n

Isolde\u2019s blood turned to ice. The thing smiled, its skin peeling back to reveal writhing tendrils beneath. \"We\u2019ve been waiting. The Eclipse<\/em> wasn\u2019t lost. It was harvesting<\/em>.\"<\/p>\n

The walls shuddered. Something in the ship\u2019s belly woke up\u2014and it was hungry.<\/p>\n

Isolde grabbed Kael and ran. Behind them, the corridor rippled<\/em>, metal dissolving into a swarm of nanites. \"The data core,\" she snarled. \"It\u2019s not a core\u2014it\u2019s a hive<\/em>.\"<\/p>\n

Kael\u2019s voice cracked. \"You knew?\"<\/p>\n

\"I suspected.\" She jammed a grenade into an airlock panel. The explosion tore through the swarm, buying seconds. \"My sister died on the Eclipse<\/em> ten years ago. That thing wasn\u2019t her. It was wearing her memories.\"<\/p>\n

The ship groaned. The HUD blared: GRAVITATIONAL ANOMALY DETECTED.<\/strong> The black hole\u2019s pull was destabilizing the hull. Isolde lunged for the escape pod, but the swarm was faster\u2014it seized Kael, tendrils burrowing into his suit. His scream echoed as his body unraveled<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Isolde slammed the pod\u2019s hatch just as the Eclipse<\/em> shattered behind her. The last thing she saw was the swarm reforming in the void\u2014into a perfect replica of her own ship, the Hollow Crown<\/em>, its hull pulsing with stolen life.<\/p>\n

And then the pod\u2019s comms crackled: \"Captain Rook? We\u2019ve picked up your signal. Prepare for docking.\"<\/p>\n

Isolde closed her eyes. The trap had sprung.<\/p>\n
