Her dark, braided hair whipped behind her, and her crimson tunic, tailored from the finest Martian silk, clung to her lithe frame. The city’s towering spires loomed above, their surfaces shimmering with holographic advertisements for off-world colonies and neural enhancements. Kaela’s boots, reinforced with anti-gravity tech, barely made a sound as she leaped over a pile of discarded nanotech components. She was being hunted.

Her mind raced back to the night before, when she had uncovered the truth about the Consortium’s plans. The ruling elite of Neo-Babylon had been secretly siphoning the life force of the city’s poorest citizens to power their immortality machines. Kaela, a rogue bio-engineer, had stumbled upon the data while working on a project to purify the city’s toxic air. Now, the Consortium’s enforcers—cybernetic soldiers with glowing red eyes—were on her tail.

She ducked into a dimly lit tavern, its walls adorned with ancient Babylonian artifacts. The patrons, a mix of off-world traders and local rebels, barely glanced at her as she slid into a corner booth. Kaela activated her wrist holo-display, projecting a map of the city’s underground tunnels. She needed to reach the Temple of Marduk, where the Consortium’s central hub was hidden. But first, she had to lose her pursuers.

“You look like you could use a drink,” a voice said. Kaela looked up to see a man with a scar running down his cheek, his eyes sharp and calculating. He wore a patchwork jacket made from salvaged space suit material, and his hands were calloused from years of tinkering with machines. Kaela recognized him as Jarek, a smuggler who had once helped her escape a Martian prison.

“I don’t have time for drinks,” Kaela said, her voice low. “The Consortium’s enforcers are after me.”

Jarek’s eyes narrowed. “What did you do this time?”

“I found out what they’re really doing with the city’s energy grid,” Kaela replied. “They’re killing people, Jarek. And I have the proof.”

Jarek leaned in closer, his voice barely a whisper. “If you’re serious, then you’re in more danger than you realize. The Consortium doesn’t just control Neo-Babylon—they control the entire solar system. You can’t take them on alone.”

“I don’t have a choice,” Kaela said, her jaw set. “If I don’t stop them, millions will die.”

Jarek studied her for a moment, then nodded. “Alright. I’ll help you. But it’s going to cost you.”

Kaela smirked. “I’ll pay you in Martian credits.”

“Deal,” Jarek said, extending his hand. Kaela shook it, feeling the weight of the task ahead. Together, they slipped out of the tavern and into the neon-lit streets, where the shadows of the enforcers loomed ever closer.

As they navigated the city’s underbelly, Kaela couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. Every corner they turned, every alley they entered, the enforcers seemed to be one step behind. Finally, they reached the entrance to the underground tunnels, a hidden hatch concealed beneath a holographic advertisement for a luxury starship.

“This is it,” Kaela said, her voice trembling with anticipation. “Once we’re inside, there’s no turning back.”

Jarek nodded, his expression grim. “Let’s do it.”

They descended into the darkness, the air growing colder with each step. The tunnels were a maze of ancient stone and modern tech, a testament to the city’s layered history. Kaela’s heart pounded as they approached the Temple of Marduk, its massive doors etched with symbols of power and sacrifice.

Inside, the Consortium’s hub was a nightmare of wires and machines, their hum filling the air with a sinister energy. Kaela’s eyes widened as she saw the rows of pods, each containing a person connected to the system. Their faces were pale, their bodies emaciated. The Consortium was draining them, using their life force to fuel their own immortality.

“We have to shut it down,” Kaela said, her voice filled with determination.

Jarek nodded, pulling out a plasma cutter. “Let’s make it quick.”

As they worked to disable the machines, the enforcers burst into the temple, their weapons glowing with deadly energy. Kaela and Jarek fought back with everything they had, their movements a blur of precision and desperation. In the chaos, Kaela managed to reach the central console, her fingers flying over the controls.

“Almost there,” she muttered, her heart racing.

“Hurry!” Jarek shouted, as he took down another enforcer.

With a final keystroke, the machines powered down, the pods opening to release their captives. The enforcers faltered, their systems overloaded by the sudden loss of energy. Kaela and Jarek seized the moment, escaping the temple as it began to collapse around them.

They emerged into the night, the city’s skyline illuminated by the glow of the dying machines. Kaela took a deep breath, the weight of her actions settling over her. She had struck a blow against the Consortium, but she knew the fight was far from over.

“What now?” Jarek asked, his voice weary.

Kaela looked at him, her eyes filled with resolve. “Now, we take the fight to them. We expose the truth to the entire solar system.”

Jarek nodded, a faint smile playing on his lips. “You’re crazy, you know that?”

“Maybe,” Kaela said, her gaze fixed on the horizon. “But it’s the only way to save us all.”

And with that, they disappeared into the night, their shadows merging with the city’s endless maze of light and darkness.

The Source...check out the great article that inspired this amazing short story: Live Insights from The Dr. Berg Show – June 6, 2025 Health & Wellness Discussion

Kaela Veyra uncovers the Consortium’s deadly secret in Neo-Babylon, racing against cybernetic enforcers to expose their immortality machine fueled by the city’s poor.
