There wasn\u2019t time to linger. The emissary moved with inhuman speed, his dagger flashing like quicksilver. Kanan unsheathed his scimitar just in time, deflecting the blade with a resonant clash. Sand swirled around their feet as they clashed, the storm a fitting backdrop to the violent tempest of their battle.<\/p>\n
It hadn\u2019t always been like this\u2014chasing myths through sun-blasted empires and ruins carved by gods. Before Kanan became a hunted man, he was a scholar in the library of Alantar, a labyrinthine archive of parchment and stone inside the sandstone city walls. He had once believed his future lay in deciphering ancient languages, not in pursuing relics of unimaginable power.<\/p>\n
But then the map had fallen into his hands\u2014a brittle piece of parchment promising the location of the legendary Tablet of Kings, rumored to grant its possessor the wisdom of the first emperor and control of the Five Shifting Sands. Kanan had resisted the lure until his brother, Najid, fell ill. The scholar had become a desperado with a singular goal: find the Tablet and save Najid\u2019s life, even if it killed him.<\/p>\n
\"Kanan, stop!\" The voice of his old friend\u2014Masud\u2014spurred him to action. Kanan\u2019s focus sharpened. With a deft twist of his scimitar, he disarmed the emissary, the dagger spinning uselessly into the sand.<\/p>\n
Breathing hard, Kanan turned to Masud, his childhood companion turned reluctant ally. \"Get Najid to safety,\" he growled. \"This has to end here.\"<\/p>\n
Masud hesitated for a beat before nodding, fear and loyalty warring in his amber eyes. He grabbed the silver cylinder from Kanan\u2019s saddle and retreated into the sandstorm, vanishing as if swallowed by the sun-drenched desert.<\/p>\n
The emissary laughed\u2014a sound that chilled more than the wind. \"Do you think this victory means you\u2019ve won, Kanan? The Tablet responds only to power.\"<\/p>\n
But Kanan didn\u2019t answer. He gripped the scimitar with renewed resolve and stepped forward, ready to face whatever lay ahead, his tunic whipping like a flag in defiance of the storm.<\/p>\n
Hours later, the winds calmed. The oasis they had sought finally revealed itself, a mirage turned real. Kanan knelt by its crystalline waters, the emerald kaftan, now tattered and scorched, clinging to his sweat-soaked frame.
