Yusef, the shrewd diplomat and heir to the Ayvalar Caliphate's most ancient bloodline, had stood beside her with his usual smirk, weaving honeyed promises of unity. Together, they had dared to dream of revolution\u2014an end to the nomadic tribal feuds, an end to the foreign raiders, and an Ayvalar reborn under one banner.<\/p>\n
But the tribal lords had bristled at Yusef's ambition, and trust was a currency not easily spent. The feasting tents burnt to the ground the same night they'd sworn allegiance to his cause.
