Donald Trump<\/a> has described Britain\u2019s two aircraft carriers as \u201ctoys\u201d in another swipe at the UK over the Iran<\/a> war.<\/p>\n

The US president insisted America \u201cdoesn\u2019t need\u201d the UK\u2019s help in the conflict, despite repeatedly criticising Keir Starmer\u2019s <\/a>reluctance to get involved.<\/p>\n

Trump has been angry with the prime minister ever since he refused America permission to launch its initial strikes on Iran from RAF bases.<\/p>\n

Starmer has also rejected the president\u2019s request for warships to help re-open the vital Strait of Hormuz <\/a>shipping lane.<\/p>\n

He made his latest comments during a cabinet meeting in the White House.<\/p>\n

Trump said: \u201cWe had the UK say that we\u2019ll send our aircraft carriers \u2013 which aren\u2019t the best aircraft carriers, by the way. They\u2019re toys compared to what we have.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll send our aircraft carrier when the war is over. I said \u2018oh that\u2019s wonderful, thank you very much\u2019. Don\u2019t bother, we don\u2019t need it. And we don\u2019t need them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s two aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, cost around \u00a36 billion each to build and weigh 65,000 tonnes. They are the largest warships ever built for the Royal Navy.<\/p>\n

Senior UK government sources have previously insisted that America has never requested aircraft carriers, and that the government has never offered to send any either.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
