that’s not how they’re issued.

The force issued an advisory through social media Wednesday about a text-based scam that appears to be striking at people in the capital once again.

The fraudulent texts purport to tell the recipient that he or she has an outstanding parking ticket and that the fine is due.

“These messages are not from the City of Fredericton,” the police force said. “The city does not send parking ticket notices via text or social media.”

Legitimate tickets only take the form of a paper ticket on one’s vehicle or a mailed Mailed notice to the registered owner of the vehicle, it said.

The police force cautioned people against clicking the link included in the scam text and sharing personal information, and it urged people to report the texts to their cellphone provider and to delete such messages.

“Please share this with friends, family, seniors and those who may not be on social media,” the advisory stated.

“If you’ve been targeted, please contact Fredericton police at 506-460-2300 or submit an online report here.”

The police force issued a similar alert last May, describing the scam at that time as a new one.

The Fredericton Independent can be reached by email <a
