class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rowarth belt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the PS pop-up that&#8217;s running from April 23-25, we\u2019ll have a new brand as our guest for the event: <a href=\"https:\/\/awling.com\/\">Awling belts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Awling have been around for a few years, but have grown to prominence recently due to starting to sell wholesale in various stores around the world. We first met them at Pitti this past January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Awling, I think it\u2019s fair to say, have also taken a while to find their style. They started with fairly plain, standard designs, but have evolved into something more distinctive. This is most evident in their buckles, which is where the design process starts. The most popular is <a href=\"https:\/\/awling.com\/products\/pilsbury-belt-pitch-black-pewter\">Pilsbury<\/a> (\u00a3165): a double-sided oval that twists at both ends to open up space for the prong (below).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEverything we do now is in this vein of being unusual but subtle,\u201d says the founder, Chris Goldstraw. \u201cWe\u2019re working on a new model at the moment, for example, which is plaque style but hand-worked to give it a more natural feel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110718\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110718\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2228-copy-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110718 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2228-copy-2-500x662.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"662\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pilsbury in pewter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The buckles and belts are made in England, and they have that British look in the straps in particular, which are all a flat piece of thicker leather. That\u2019s quite distinct from the more common, European style which is made up of two pieces of finer leather, with a raised section in the middle and sunk stitching along either side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This style, sometimes called \u2018lined and raised\u2019 is so universal that it barely feels like a style at all, but British belts are traditionally thicker and more casual &#8211; often using bridle leather, an oily cowhide which (as the name suggests) originally comes from horse tack and is built primarily for strength.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Someone like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timhardy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tim Hardy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Worcestershire is a good example, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/macgregorandmichael\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MacGregor &amp; Michael<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the bespoke side.)<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110719\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110719\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DR1AK121920-01300-1-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-110719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/DR1AK121920-01300-1-copy-500x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110719\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bridle leather belt (Drake&#8217;s)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110720\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Rubato-Pigskin-Belt-Brown-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-110720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Rubato-Pigskin-Belt-Brown-copy-500x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lined and raised belt (Rubato)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen we toured around the UK looking for manufacturers, there were lots of tiny operations making belts like this &#8211; often just one man and a shed,\u201d says Chris. \u201cIt was hard to find anyone at scale, but eventually we found a great maker with the help of Adam who founded the bag brand <a href=\"https:\/\/cherchbi.co.uk\/\">Cherchbi<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cherchbi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a blast from the past &#8211; the last time we covered them on PS was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/2012\/11\/cherchbi-bags-tweed-leather-and-brass.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2012<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; but apparently they&#8217;re still around. Adam no longer runs the brand however.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chris started off making belts that were similar to those bridle ones &#8211; wide and plain &#8211; just with an Italian leather. But over time he shifted to slimmer and unusual styles, still with a cut edge and so a flat look, but with interesting buckles like <a href=\"https:\/\/awling.com\/products\/rowarth-belt-walnut-brown-brass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Rowarth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (\u00a3175, below), which is sort of a British version of a western belt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat\u2019s been the hardest thing to be honest, finding our aesthetic, but we\u2019re really happy with where we are now, it\u2019s given us a clear focus for new developments,\u201d says Chris.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110716\" style=\"width: 467px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2100-copy-2-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110716 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2100-copy-2-467x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Model in Rowarth belt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s been interesting trying out the style with my own outfits. I got <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awling.com\/products\/parwich-belt-pitch-black-pebble-brass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Parwich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (\u00a3175) in brass on a pebbled black leather a few months ago, and I\u2019ve been trying it out regularly since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The vast majority of the time I wear that European \u2018lined and raised\u2019 style of belt, even with casual outfits. They\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atemporubato.com\/collections\/belts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mostly from Rubato<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one-inch wide, and I like the way the belt adds a smart touch to a T-shirt and jeans. When I go more casual it\u2019s usually a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/2022\/01\/bespoke-braided-belt-from-tightly_stitched-review.html\">braided leather<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or a western style from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silverostrich.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Silver Ostrich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ve found the Parwich actually more subtle and therefore more my style than Silver Ostrich &#8211; and a nice alternative to a braided leather or suede. It has more heft than a calf leather, but still smarter than most casual belts. The colour range also fits well with modern tonal modes of dressing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110717\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110717\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2164-copy-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110717 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2164-copy-2-500x659.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"659\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pilsbury belt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Belts is a category that can be hard to break into &#8211; everyone sells them, from multi-brand stores to shoe shops &#8211; and it\u2019s difficult to have a point of difference without becoming too outlandish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Awling seem to have done a good job, perhaps due to Chris\u2019s taste level. His day job is still an architectural photographer, and he\u2019s long had a passion for menswear alongside both architecture and photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was always into well-made clothes when I was younger,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted something that would last years, both because it was quality and because it was subtler, without big logos all over it for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think a lot of that carries through into the belts we\u2019re doing now &#8211; we\u2019re aiming for two new buckle designs a year, something like that, and those ideas of subtle style and quality run through them all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110715\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110715\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2056-copy-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110715 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.permanentstyle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/34A2056-copy-3-500x687.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"687\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rowarth belt in pewter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chris will have his new developments for this year &#8211; the plaque mentioned earlier and a slim 25mm model &#8211; on display at the pop-up. They won\u2019t go sale until August.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In terms of availability elsewhere, his wholesale customers are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tailorskeep.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tailors Keep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in San Francisco, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newtonjames.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newton James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Kansas City, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrmanners.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Manners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Taipei and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theworkersclub.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TWC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in London. Adam at TWC only has a couple of styles, but is looking to expand that.
