But researchers think that up to 45% of dementia cases are \u201cpotentially preventable\u201d\u00a0<a role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/preventative-measures-dementia-by-age_uk_66decc9de4b0850940b55d66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-vars-item-name=\"by addressing 14 lifestyle factors\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"67f66a53e4b0b09182ab2693\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"66decc9de4b0850940b55d66\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\">by addressing 14 lifestyle factors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These include more obvious choices, like not smoking and staying active. And a new paper published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/jech.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2026\/03\/18\/jech-2025-225139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of Epidemiology &amp; Community Health<\/a>\u00a0had suggested that another, simpler step \u2013 cooking, even as little as once a week\u00a0\u2013 could significantly reduce dementia risk, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cooking once a week appeared to reduce risk by as much as 67%<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In this research, which involved 10,978 over-65s, the study authors compared people\u2019s self-reported cooking rates and skill levels to their dementia incidence over time.<\/p>\n<p>They tracked them for six years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Compared to cooking less than once a week, cooking once a week was linked to a 23% lower dementia risk among men and 27% for women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those who weren\u2019t experienced cooks, making a homemade meal once a week was associated with a 67% lower likelihood.<\/p>\n<p>People who cooked at least five times a week saw the best results, however. And those who were highly competent in the kitchen also saw benefits, though these didn\u2019t seem to rise with cooking frequency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These findings seemed to hold true after accounting for other factors we know can affect dementia risk, like income level and education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating an environment where people can cook meals when they are older may be important for the prevention of dementia,\u201d the study authors concluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- https:\/\/smartframe.io\/embedding-support --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<h3><strong>Expertise might lower dementia risk\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/birdwatching-brain-age-protection_uk_699d8d7ee4b09763577ba9b6\">A birdwatching study<\/a> found that those who were really, really skilled at the hobby saw lower dementia risk than less-skilled peers. \u201cHigh-level expertise in a complex hobby can provide a protective \u2018cognitive reserve\u2019 as we age,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/birdwatching-brain-age-protection_uk_699d8d7ee4b09763577ba9b6\">authors wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, speaking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemediacentre.org\/expert-reaction-to-observational-study-of-older-people-preparing-home-cooked-meals-and-risk-of-dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science Media Centre,<\/a> Dr Susan Kohlhaas, an Executive Director of Research and Partnerships at Alzheimer\u2019s Research UK, stressed that this was an observational study that couldn\u2019t prove causation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cPeople who cook regularly may also have healthier diets, be more physically active, and be in better overall health, all of which are linked to better brain health.
