Michigan candidate\u00a0for governor,\u00a0John James,\u00a0says Canadian wildfire smoke needs to be better controlled,\u00a0as part of a deal to open the Gordie Howe Bridge.\u00a0\u00a0James made the comments on\u00a0a\u00a0video\u00a0on\u00a0Facebook\u00a0earlier this month.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look at wildfire smoke every summer.\u00a0\u00a0They\u2019re throwing off 500 million vehicles\u2019 worth of carbon emissions into our air each and every year and doing very little to nothing about it.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0got\u00a0to change right now,” said James.\u00a0 “As a part of any deal we do with Gordie Howe Bridge, we\u00a0have to\u00a0work in close cooperation with Ottawa to make sure\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0also managing their business, so we can keep our people\u00a0healthy\u00a0and we can keep our relationship strong.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last summer, James\u00a0wrote a letter to Canadian officials asking them for action to keep wildfire smoke from drifting into Michigan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump endorsed\u00a0James on Monday\u00a0to become Michigan\u2019s next governor.\u00a0\u00a0Other elected officials around the country quickly followed suit.\u00a0\u00a0James will face\u00a0businessman\u00a0Perry Johnson, and former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox in the Aug. 4\u00a0Republican primary.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Detroit police pick up 180 curfew violators during fireworks<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n

The Detroit Police Department is reporting that\u00a0it\u00a0detained 180 juveniles on Monday night for curfew violations before the annual\u00a0Ford\u00a0fireworks show over the Detroit River.\u00a0\u00a0A news release says 171 of those detained were city residents.\u00a0\u00a0Nine\u00a0live\u00a0elsewhere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

A special curfew was approved for fireworks night.\u00a0\u00a0It required everyone under 18 to be accompanied by an adult from 8 p.m.\u00a0until 6\u00a0a.m.\u00a0\u00a0The police department says 19\u00a0adults\u00a0were arrested for a variety of infractions,\u00a0including carrying concealed weapons, aggravated assault, and disorderly conduct.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

One\u00a018-year-old\u00a0was shot by a police officer\u00a0after a short chase,\u00a0several hours\u00a0before the\u00a0fireworks\u00a0began.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dearborn schools seek new bond approval<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Dearborn residents will see a new millage proposal on their November general election ballot.\u00a0\u00a0The city\u2019s Board of Education will ask voters to approve a\u00a0$1.5\u00a0billion\u00a0bond measure.\u00a0\u00a0If passed, the money will fund the construction of six new schools.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The district says the\u00a0bond would\u00a0also be used to remodel every\u00a0remaining\u00a0school building over the next 20 years.\u00a0 The board approved ballot language for the proposal at Monday\u2019s meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New apartment complex opens on west side\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n

A west-side Detroit\u00a0neighborhood is getting a new apartment building.\u00a0\u00a0The city opened the OSI Art Apartments Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0newly constructed\u00a0four-story complex provides 30 residential units.\u00a0\u00a0About half qualify as \u201caffordable housing\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield says the project will make a difference along the Grand River corridor.\u00a0\u201cIt is an honor as mayor to welcome this project to our city.\u00a0\u00a0A project that combines housing, culture, arts \u2013 and to breathe this vibrancy back into our community, which is so needed in our city.\u00a0\u00a0So\u00a0I thank you all so much for investing in Detroit.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The development, which also includes\u00a05,000 square feet\u00a0of retail space, will be the gateway to the West End Gallery District.\u00a0\u00a0The building located\u00a0on\u00a0Grand River near\u00a0Selden is named for\u00a0Nigerian-American\u00a0artist Osi Audu.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n
