{"id":15186864,"date":"2026-06-29T22:32:34","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T02:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inthacity.com\/news\/seranthony-dominguez-loses-closer-role-for-now-in-fluid-white-sox-bullpen\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T22:45:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T02:45:28","slug":"seranthony-dominguez-loses-closer-role-for-now-in-fluid-white-sox-bullpen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inthacity.com\/news\/seranthony-dominguez-loses-closer-role-for-now-in-fluid-white-sox-bullpen\/","title":{"rendered":"Seranthony Dominguez loses closer role \u2014 for now \u2014 in fluid White Sox bullpen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALTIMORE \u2014 The titles and roles have been fluid in <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/white-sox\" target=\"_blank\"><u>White Sox<\/u><\/a> manager Will Venable\u2019s bullpen.<\/p>\n<p>He named Seranthony Dominguez his closer in <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/white-sox\/2026\/02\/13\/white-sox-bullpen-spring-training-seranthony-dominguez-jordan-hicks\" target=\"_blank\"><u>spring training<\/u><\/a>, in case the right-hander\u2019s two-year, $20 million free-agent signing didn\u2019t announce that itself.<\/p>\n<p>But all season, Venable has <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/white-sox\/2026\/06\/15\/chicago-white-sox-bullpen-closer-seranthony-dominguez-bryan-hudson-will-venable-zach-bove-sean-newcomb-grant-taylor-braves-dodgers\">played the matchups<\/a> in high-leverage situations regardless of the inning or save opportunity, often turning to flame-throwing reliever Grant Taylor in the biggest moments but also showing faith in lanky southern Illinois native Bryan Hudson.<\/p>\n<p>Now, after a tough month for Dominguez with a pair of blown saves against division rivals, Venable is taking the Sox\u2019 big-money reliever out of the late-game equation \u2014 for now, at least.<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old veteran, who played in the World Series last season for the Blue Jays, pitched a scoreless sixth inning in Sunday\u2019s loss to the Royals, the earliest he\u2019d entered a game this season.<\/p>\n<p>Venable called it \u201ca little bit of a lower leverage spot to get him back on line, and obviously he did a great job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a little bump in the road, but we are not worried about titles or changing roles,\u201d Venable said. \u201cIt\u2019s about getting him in a good spot and getting him back on line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second-year manager told Dominguez last week that he\u2019d be seeing earlier action in lower-pressure situations to get back on track, after Dominguez blew his fourth and fifth saves of the season on consecutive days against the Tigers and Guardians.<\/p>\n<p>The first outing of his reset went well enough, with Dominguez giving up a single and striking out two, including All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. to end the frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made me feel good, because the things that I&#8217;ve been working on got a good result,\u201d said Dominguez, who is taking the demotion, however temporary, in stride.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center>\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\" data-crop=\"\">\n<figure class=\"Figure\"><a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-510000\" name=\"image-510000\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Seranthony Dom\u00ednguez leaves the game against the Tampa Bay Rays during the ninth inning at Rate Field on Thursday.\" width=\"490\" height=\"275\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cst.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/dbc1875\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/5690x3193+0+0\/resize\/490x275!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fbe%2Fb4%2Fb00da4344d6282f2113e075d3ed3%2F2271682721.jpg\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-content\"><figcaption class=\"Figure-caption\">\n<p>Seranthony Dom\u00ednguez leaves a game earlier this season against the Tampa Bay Rays.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><span class=\"line\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">\n<p>Michael Reaves\/Getty<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s part of the game,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes you\u2019ve got to step down a little bit and step up again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time they give me the baseball, I just try to go up and focus on doing my thing and trying to get the best result that I can. My confidence is there. It&#8217;s just like sometimes things don&#8217;t go the way you want, and I\u2019ve got to find the way to help the team win,\u201d Dominguez said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s 3-3 on the season with a 4.30 ERA and 12 saves in 32 outings, with 16 walks and 35 strikeouts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#8217;s had a rough go, but he&#8217;s also had this before,\u201d Sox pitching coach Zach Bove said. \u201cSometimes when he falls behind, it&#8217;s not that he&#8217;s going to get hit hard multiple times in a row, but it&#8217;s the walks. It&#8217;s the falling behind counts and giving guys opportunities.\u2029So I think that&#8217;s been the message recently, is hey, just free him up, attack the zone. Your stuff is really good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sox are also looking for more consistency from the long, winding arm action that powers Dominguez\u2019s 97 mph fastball and sinker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just has a ton of variance in his delivery,\u201d Bove said. \u201cThose guys are just tough to shrink them in zone, get his misses more in the zone\u2026 The past couple days, we&#8217;ve had a good work week on that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still have 100% trust in Ser, but what&#8217;s the best time to get him to get some positive momentum going?\u201d Bove said.<\/p>\n<p>While Dominguez aims to rediscover his form in lower-stress situations, Venable said \u201cI don\u2019t think that really changes the calculus\u201d on the Sox\u2019 usage of <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/white-sox\/2026\/06\/28\/grant-taylor-white-sox-bullpen-jacob-gonzalez-walkoff-jaden-fauske\">Taylor<\/a>, their Swiss-Army-knife in the back of the pen, or <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/white-sox\/2026\/05\/14\/alton-illinois-cubs-draft-pick-bryan-hudson-white-sox-cardinals-brewers\">Hudson<\/a>, who has notched three saves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just been consistently trying to find the right spots for each one of these guys and find the path to winning, and that looks different every night,\u201d Venable said. \u201cIn Grant\u2019s case, we\u2019ve seen him pitch in the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth inning.
