John Wayne shared the screen with dozens of actresses during one of Hollywood’s most legendary careers, but only one became both his greatest onscreen partner and his closest friend.<\/p>\n

According to ScreenRant<\/em><\/a>, no actress matched Wayne quite like Maureen O’Hara. Together, they starred in five films over two decades, creating one of the most beloved partnerships in classic Hollywood. Off screen, their relationship was just as remarkable.<\/p>\n

Wayne and O’Hara first teamed up in 1950’s Rio Grande<\/em>, but it was their chemistry that kept bringing them back together. The pair would go on to star in five films: Rio Grande<\/em> (1950), The Quiet Man<\/em> (1952), The Wings of Eagles<\/em> (1957), McLintock!<\/em> (1963) and Big Jake<\/em> (1971).<\/p>\n

While each film showcased a different side of their relationship, ScreenRant<\/em> argues that together they formed John Wayne’s greatest onscreen partnership. Much of that chemistry, the publication notes, came from the fact that the two stars were genuine friends away from the cameras.<\/p>\n

“I was the only leading lady big enough and tough enough for John Wayne,” she said.<\/p>\n

She recalled filming one of the movie’s most physically demanding scenes herself\u2014including the famous sequence in which Wayne’s character drags her across the Irish countryside\u2014without using a stunt double.<\/p>\n

“I always gave as good as I got,” O’Hara said, adding that their mutual respect made their on-screen romance feel authentic and believable.<\/p>\n

According to O’Hara’s grandson, Conor Beau Fitzsimons, the pair became close almost immediately after meeting through director John Ford. Wayne was someone O’Hara could simply relax around, and their relationship quickly grew into one of Hollywood’s most enduring friendships.<\/p>\n
