New York Knicks icon Patrick Ewing is joining the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach on Brian Keefe’s staff, sources told Shams Charania of ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ewing, who played 15 seasons with the Knicks and still leads the franchise in all-time scoring with 23,663 points, returned to the organization in 2024 as an ambassador.<\/p>\n

His last coaching stint ended in March 2023, when the Georgetown product was fired by his alma mater after going 75-109 as a head coach over six seasons. He led the school to the Big East Tournament title in 2021, ending a five-year stretch without a berth in the NCAA Tournament, but then won six and seven games in his final two seasons before being dismissed.<\/p>\n

This would be Ewing’s second stint as an assistant in Washington. Following the end of his 17-year playing career in 2002, Ewing quickly transitioned to an assistant role with the Wizards, then owned by his former longtime rival Michael Jordan. He took up similar roles with the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, and Charlotte Hornets before returning to college basketball for his first head coaching opportunity with the Hoyas.<\/p>\n

The Wizards are also hiring veteran bench boss Steve Clifford to serve as a coaching advisor, Charania<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
