A man accused of driving drunk and causing a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 in Massachusetts early Monday morning is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

John Tarshi, a 25-year-old from Lawrence, was charged with operating under the influence of liquor after the crash on I-95 southbound in Reading.<\/p>\n

State police said they responded to reports of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lane around 3 a.m. Monday. Before troopers arrived at the scene, the car, a black Porsche 911, had crashed in the left lane by Exit 54A in Woburn.<\/p>\n

The driver of the Porsche, identified by police as Tarshi, of Lawrence, was taken into custody. He is scheduled for arraignment at Woburn District Court.<\/p>\n

No one was hurt and only Tarshi’s vehicle was involved.<\/p>\n

Reports of wrong-way driving are on the rise, including several fatal incidents, including the death of Massachusetts State Trooper Kevin Trainor.<\/a> Since the fall of 2024, state troopers alone say they have received roughly 24 calls a month regarding cards heading the wrong way. Other states are seeing the issue as well. <\/p>\n

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey<\/a> previously announced an initiative to target the issue. And a new initiative launched Monday has law enforcement across New England joining forces to cut down on these incidents. It’s called the New England Drive to Save Lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need everyone to take seriously the impact that their choices behind the wheel have on others while they are driving,\u201d said Massachusetts State Police Maj. Dante DeMarco. \u201cOver the past two years, troopers across Massachusetts have responded to 680 calls for wrong-way drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n
