Hojas\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Actor Sam O\u2019Neill has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 78, his family announced.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>O\u2019Neill has been treated for the past 4 years for angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare fast-growing type of blood cancer.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>No cause of death has been released, but O\u2019Neill\u2019s family said the star of the 1993 film Jurassic Park was cancer-free when he died.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Actor Sam O\u2019Neill has died following a 4-year battle with a rare, aggressive form of cancer that can be difficult to diagnose and treat, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neill\u2019s family&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DauK0SrT6uJ\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;that the 78-year-old actor had died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>No cause of death was given, but family members said O\u2019Neill was believed to be cancer-free when he died in Sydney, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, O\u2019Neill, best-known for his role in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0107290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jurassic Park<\/a> film franchise, was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/celebrity-health\/sam-neill-death-blood-cancer-health-history-rcna587278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diagnosed<\/a>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/t-cell-lymphoma#types\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma<\/a>, a rare type of blood cancer that affects white blood cells known as T-cells. The fast-growing blood cancer can spread to the lungs, liver, or bone marrow.<\/p>\n<p>In his memoir, \u201cDid I Ever Tell You This?\u201d, O\u2019Neill&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/sam-neills-doctor-thought-blood-cancer-lymphoma-was-undetected-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;that doctors had initially diagnosed some swollen glands in his neck as \u201cundetected COVID.\u201d Eventually, a PET scan revealed O\u2019Neill had the rare lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neill&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/celebrity-health\/sam-neill-death-blood-cancer-health-history-rcna587278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underwent<\/a>&nbsp;four rounds of chemotherapy. In late 2023, he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cp7B76NATGb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;on Instagram that his cancer had been in remission for 8 months. <\/p>\n<p>In a later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-10-16\/actor-sam-neill-australian-story-speaks-candidly-about-cancer\/102909102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a>, he added that he still required infusions every 2 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/sam-neill-reveals-cancer-battle-and-fight-for-life-saving-treatment-access-c-22195450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">April 2026 interview<\/a>, O\u2019Neill said he was cancer-free. He added he had also been treated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/car-t-cell-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAR-T cell therapy<\/a>, a type of immunotherapy treatment that genetically changes the body\u2019s immune cells so they can fight cancer.<\/p>\n<h2>AITL is a rare cancer that is deadly and difficult to treat<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lymphoma.org\/understanding-lymphoma\/aboutlymphoma\/nhl\/aitl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma<\/a>&nbsp;(AITL) is an aggressive form of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). AITL accounts for 20% to 30% of all PTCL cases.<\/p>\n<p>The median age for diagnosis of AITL is 65 years.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms from AITL include fatigue, high fever, night sweats, and skin rash. The symptoms can sometimes be similar to autoimmune diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis requires a biopsy of tumor tissue. Additional exams such as blood tests, CT scans, bone marrow biopsies, and PET scans may also be used.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pathologyoutlines.com\/topic\/lymphomanonbaitl.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AITL<\/a>&nbsp;affects immune-regulating cells, so it can cause immune system malfunction as well as tumor growth.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12198265\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exact cause<\/a>&nbsp;of AITL isn\u2019t known, but it can be driven by genetic mutations in stem cells as well as secondary mutations in genes that regulate how DNA is used. Many AITL cases involve the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/epstein-barr-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Epstein-Barr virus<\/a>, which can infect non-cancerous cells that surround the AITL-affected T cells.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.mdanderson.org\/profiles\/swaminathan_iyer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Swaminthan Iyer<\/a>, MD, a professor of lymphoma-myeloma at\u00a0the\u00a0UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, said AITL presents many challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAngioimmunoblastic T\u2011cell lymphoma (AITL) can be a challenging disease to diagnose and treat,\u201d he told Healthline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAITL can go undiagnosed for some time,\u201d Iyer explained. \u201cIn many cases, the disease presents with non-specific symptoms such as skin rash, diarrhea, weight loss, and swelling of the lymph nodes.
