(Photo by Ting Shen\/Xinhua via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>An FDA advisory panel is expected to vote on whether to allow seven types of peptides to be sold as compounded medications.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Proponents describe wellness peptides as a \u201cfountain of youth\u201d that can promote healing from injury and improved overall wellness.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Doctors say the safety and effectiveness of the peptides have not been adequately studied.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will decide this week whether to loosen restrictions on seven peptides that proponents say can improve health and wellness.<\/p>\n<p>If restrictions are eased, the peptides could then be prepared and sold as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/drugs\/compounded-medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compounded medications<\/a>\u00a0with a prescription by pharmacies in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The advisory panel\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/advisory-committee-calendar\/july-23-24-2026-meeting-pharmacy-compounding-advisory-committee-07232026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meeting<\/a>\u00a0is scheduled for July 23\u201324. Their recommendation would still need to be approved by FDA administrators.<\/p>\n<p>The seven peptides on the agenda are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>TB-500<\/li>\n<li>BPC-157<\/li>\n<li>Semax<\/li>\n<li>Epitalon<\/li>\n<li>Emideltide<\/li>\n<li>KPV<\/li>\n<li>MOTs-C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The peptides are being reviewed as potential treatments for conditions such as ulcerative colitis, wound healing, obesity, and migraine. <\/p>\n<p>Peptides have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/rfk-jr-wants-make-easier-get-peptides-fda-scientists-disagree-rcna352323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promoted<\/a>\u00a0by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has said he\u2019s used the peptides in the past to help heal from injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Other proponents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/are-wellness-peptide-injectables-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describe<\/a>\u00a0peptides marketed for wellness as a \u201cfountain of youth\u201d that can improve muscle mass and increase longevity, among other benefits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.stanford.edu\/katrin-svensson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Katrin Svensson<\/a>, PhD, an associate professor of pathology at Stanford University, urges caution as the FDA evaluates peptides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important to separate the promise of peptide therapeutics from the evidence supporting any individual peptide,\u201d she told Healthline. \u201cPeptides are a very promising class of drugs and several have transformed the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and obesity. However, that does not mean every peptide being marketed has been adequately studied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think the question is whether peptides are good or bad. The question is whether there is sufficient scientific evidence for each specific peptide,\u201d Svensson added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/mir-b-ali\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mir Ali<\/a>, MD, a bariatric surgeon, bariatric medicine specialist, and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center&nbsp;in California, said making compounded versions of the peptides might provide the medical community with more information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it might be a good idea to broaden the application of these medications so we have a better ability to evaluate them,\u201d he told Healthline.<\/p>\n<h2>Doctors concerned about safety of peptides<\/h2>\n<p>Not everyone is convinced of the safety and effectiveness of peptides.<\/p>\n<p>A group of FDA scientists has posted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/advisory-committees\/advisory-committee-calendar\/july-23-24-2026-meeting-pharmacy-compounding-advisory-committee-07232026#event-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">documents<\/a>\u00a0raising concerns about the peptides\u2019 safety and the lack of scientific review of the substances.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/provider\/bert-mandelbaum-819188.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bert Mandelbaum<\/a>, MD, a sports medicine specialist, orthopedic surgeon, and co-director of the Regenerative Orthobiologic Center at Cedars-Sinai Orthopedics in Los Angeles,\u00a0told\u00a0Healthline in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/are-wellness-peptide-injectables-safe\">recent interview<\/a> that so-called &#8220;wellness&#8221; peptides are neither safe nor effective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has nothing to do with wellness,\u201d he said. \u201cI would call it more of an uninformed fad. It\u2019s worse than that \u2014 it\u2019s criminal. The influencers, including RFK Jr., are abusing the system and not following the science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/family-medicine\/ca\/santa-monica\/david-cutler-1255368338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Cutler<\/a>, MD, a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in California, is also adamantly opposed to easing restrictions on these peptides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has never been a systematic study on the benefits and risks,\u201d he told Healthline. \u201cNo one has looked at the adverse effects they might have on humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Svensson said the lack of information on these peptides is also her biggest issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy biggest concern is how little we know about many of these molecules,\u201d she said. \u201cFor a large number of experimental peptides, there are very limited pharmacology and toxicology data. We often don\u2019t know what happens with chronic administration, whether they accumulate in tissues or whether they have effects outside their intended target.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What to know about peptides<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/peptides-for-bodybuilding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peptides<\/a>\u00a0are short chains of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/video\/essential-amino-acids\">amino acids<\/a> that act as a signaling molecule that sends a message to the body to carry out certain functions.<\/p>\n<p>Most are administered by injection and have been touted as helping with injuries, muscle recovery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/how-to-reset-metabolism\">metabolism<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/peptides-skincare\">skin care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/type-2-diabetes\/considering-glp1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GLP-1 medications<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/type-2-diabetes\/insulin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insulin<\/a>\u00a0are peptides. The drugs are approved by the FDA as treatments for obesity and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>There are compounded versions of GLP-1 medications, but FDA officials issued a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-alerts-and-statements\/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warning<\/a>&nbsp;in June about the safety of these drugs. They said these medications should only be used by patients whose medical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration placed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/certain-bulk-drug-substances-use-compounding-may-present-significant-safety-risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">restrictions<\/a>\u00a0in 2023 on 19 peptides, including the seven currently under consideration, moving them into a category that effectively prohibits compounding pharmacies from making them.<\/p>\n<p>There have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41966639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">past studies<\/a> showing the benefits of peptides, but most of that research has been conducted on animals, not humans.<\/p>\n<p>Ali said there are indications that certain peptides could be beneficial. \u201cSome of them have shown promise to have broader applications to humans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that more research is needed into the peptides that are currently banned by the FDA. \u201cWe don\u2019t the full extent of the risks, benefits, and side effects of these medications,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Svensson agreed. \u201cI think peptides have enormous therapeutic potential, but I also think they should be held to the same scientific standards as any other drug,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing a naturally occurring peptide does not imply that it is effective or safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are biologically active compounds,\u201d added Cutler. \u201cAs biological agents, they could be beneficial or they could be harmful.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What to use instead of peptides<\/h2>\n<p>Mandelbaum said there are a variety of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/orthoinfo.aaos.org\/en\/treatment\/orthobiologics-faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">orthobiological compounds<\/a>\u00a0that have been proven safe and effective for supporting healing.<\/p>\n<p>He added that building in recovery time in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/10-benefits-of-exercise\">exercise regimen<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/sleep-hygiene\">quality sleep<\/a>, can also help prevent injury.<\/p>\n<p>Ali noted that anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen can also be beneficial.
