The Detroit Department of Construction and Demolition gave city council an update on the removal of the contaminated dirt in the city on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Department has replaced tainted\u00a0backfill\u00a0in\u00a0more\u00a0than 100 properties.\u00a0That’s\u00a0out of the 450 lots that were\u00a0identified.\u00a0The average cost of the fill removal and replacement is about $36,000 per site.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Department Director Tim Palazzo says they have tightened up process for\u00a0approving construction\u00a0fill materials\u00a0over the last several months.\u00a0“The first thing is that we collapsed the number of sites and sources from which we receive\u00a0fill\u00a0material down to seven public pits. These only excavate native sand, gravel, soil\u00a0from longstanding operations.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Palazzo says they inspect those sites\u00a0on\u00a0a monthly basis and send their staff\u2014as well as a third-party environmental consultant\u2014to oversee operations at the\u00a0sites. He\u00a0says they have also started sampling the fill before it even leaves the source site.<\/p>\n

Panelists include Elida Reyes from Community Action for Empowerment, Lauren Fink from Southfield Neighbors Action Committee, Dr. Patricia Talley from Mexico Negro and U.S. House Representative Rashida Tlaib.<\/p>\n

The event\u00a0is\u00a0Wednesday from 6:30- 9 p.m. in Room 115 at the Southfield Pavilion at 26000 Evergreen Road.<\/p>\n

Good Food for Michigan<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Dearborn Public Schools has received a state grant designed to bring more Michigan-grown food to its cafeterias. The Good Food for Michigan Project<\/a>\u00a0is giving\u00a0the district more than\u00a0$460,000. Dearborn schools serve more than 3 million meals to around\u00a020,000\u00a0students at more than 30 sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Good Food for Michigan\u00a0Project\u00a0is a\u00a0collaboration\u00a0between the\u202fMichigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, the\u202fCenter for Good Food Purchasing, and the\u202fMichigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Detroit Riverfront hosts art exhibit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

People visiting Detroit\u2019s Riverfront and Southwest Greenway can now take in a little bit of the DIA\u2019s art collection. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is hosting the museum\u2019s Inside Out project<\/a> featuring large-scale reproductions of\u00a07 works. The pieces will be in place until October.<\/p>\n

Girls soccer clinic<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Hamtramck Parks Conservancy and the city\u2019s recreation department are partnering to offer a girls soccer clinic on August 17<\/a>. Women coaches and trainers will work with girls between the ages of 10 and 17 years old. Balls, nets and pennies are provided.<\/p>\n

The clinic runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Veterans Park Soccer Arena at 8684 Joseph Campau.\u00a0<\/p>\n
