At least, that\u2019s the mindset <a href=\"https:\/\/beesafemosquitocontrol.com\/\">Bee Safe Mosquito Control<\/a> is taking in their approach of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/videos\/cglj0nl5d1wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">releasing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 600,000 mosquitoes across DC this summer. The male mosquitoes are infected with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldmosquitoprogram.org\/en\/work\/wolbachia-method\/how-it-works?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=23830984920_201555615012&amp;utm_content=812883182298&amp;utm_term=wolbachia%20bacteria&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=23830984920&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAooVqXPWpfK-5ytJvXtbkjJonCfPp&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwg5zTBhCLARIsAP2AFU5E0mYP62SK2fdKy4Wr7ELwji7UKiJScTBe44d0a2xUntQDJVJDteoaAhgoEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wolbachia bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which works to sterilize female mosquitoes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The good news for DC <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">residents is that the male mosquitoes do not bite humans, and once they mate with females, the bacteria they carry prevents future eggs from hatching. The Silver Spring company, the only one in the country that offers this kind of pest control service in residential areas, aims to reduce the harmful effects of insecticide spraying by using a method that affects only mosquitoes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Owner Todd Montgomery, who started the company in 2023, says they are serving 25 residential customers in DC and Maryland by releasing 1,500 mosquitoes a week in each of their backyards throughout the summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe basically are trying to control mosquitoes without impacting anything else to the greatest extent possible,\u201d Montgomery says. \u201cWe want to be as eco-friendly as we possibly can be.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The company sources its mosquitoes from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mosquitomate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MosquitoMate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a company in Kentucky that uses technology developed by the University of Kentucky to infect mosquitoes with the naturally-occurring Wolbachia bacteria that causes sterility in females.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This particular method is a new offering for the company this season. They also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beesafemosquitocontrol.com\/how-it-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">offer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mosquito baiting stations, which attract mosquitoes and infect them with fatal chemicals, and a service where they apply mosquito-killing bacteria to bodies of water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The newer method has seen success in other areas, with the government of Singapore releasing millions of bacteria-infected mosquitoes, aiming to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666606526000453\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 50 percent of households by the end of 2026, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666606526000453\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">seeing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> an up to 90 percent reduction in mosquito populations in the treated areas.
