The Texas Rangers acquired catcher Logan O’Hoppe<\/a> and right-hander Chase Silseth<\/a> from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for infield prospect Angel Arredondo, the teams announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Texas is optioning O’Hoppe to Triple-A Round Rock, according to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

O’Hoppe adds more catching depth to a Texas squad that’s been weak at the position. The Rangers’ two Opening Day backstops, Kyle Higashioka<\/a> and Danny Jansen<\/a>, are both injured. Elias D\u00edaz<\/a> started behind the plate Wednesday in Texas’ win over Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n

O’Hoppe, 26, has appeared in just 75 games this season because of a broken wrist. He’s slashing a career-worst .209\/.271\/.295 with four homers and 23 RBIs over 256 plate appearances. He’s also been negative defensively. However, O’Hoppe has shown some pop during his five-year career. He hit 20 homers in 2024 and averaged 18 long balls a year during his first three full MLB seasons.<\/p>\n

The New York native also projects to be catching for the Rangers long term, as he’s arbitration-eligible through 2028. He’s earning $2.625 million this season.<\/p>\n

“I thought, in his case, the best thing for him would be a change of scenery,” Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak said of O’Hoppe, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Silseth, 26, owns a 2.72 ERA, 3.42 FIP, and 1.41 WHIP along with 42 strikeouts and just three homers allowed in 39 2\/3 innings for the Angels this season. He’s striking out nearly 11 batters per nine innings but also has a career-high 5.0 BB\/9 rate.<\/p>\n

Like O’Hoppe, Silseth is under team control for the foreseeable future, as he won’t become eligible for arbitration until 2028.<\/p>\n

For the AL-worst Angels, the trade represents the first of what’s expected to be many deals in a summer fire sale. The Halos are headed toward an 11th straight losing season, having made the playoffs just once since 2009.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we enter this trading period, one of the things we are focused on is understanding change,” Mozeliak said, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register<\/a>. “Clearly, where the Angels are right now, we need to do some things differently.”<\/p>\n

Arredondo, 19, was not ranked among the Rangers’ top 30 prospects prior to the trade. Originally signed by Texas out of his native Mexico in 2024, Arredondo hit .243\/.371\/.392 with eight homers, 44 RBIs, and three steals in 85 games at Low-A Hickory this year. He’s primarily played third base in 2026, but he also has experience at shortstop and second.<\/p>\n

“In our system, he’s probably in the top 10 prospects,” Mozeliak said while citing Arredondo’s “plus bat-to-ball skill” and strong defense, per Fletcher. “I know he wasn’t getting a lot of third-party recognition in this process, but I do think he’s a better player than he’s getting recognized for.”<\/p>\n

After trading O’Hoppe, the Angels reinstated veteran catcher Travis d’Arnaud<\/a> from the injured list.<\/p>\n

The Rangers – who sit 1.5 games up on the Houston Astros in the AL West – transferred both Jansen and right-hander Jose Corniell<\/a> to the 60-day IL to open 40-man roster spots for their new additions.<\/p>\n
