Michigan voters went to the polls\u00a0Tuesday to select candidates who will meet in the general election in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Congressman John James won the Republican primary for governor.\u00a0\u00a0He had a tough competitor in\u00a0businessman\u00a0Perry Johnson.\u00a0\u00a0Johnson ran a steady flight of television commercials,\u00a0at times portraying James as a “DEI candidate.”\u00a0\u00a0During the course of\u00a0the Republican primary, James made few appearances in the city of Detroit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

During his victory speech\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0night,\u00a0James\u00a0laid out his plans if\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0elected\u00a0Senator.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0going to cut taxes.\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0going to lower your energy bills.\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0going to protect Medicaid for those who need it, while stopping fraud and abuse from those who would steal from it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

James will face Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the November general election.\u00a0\u00a0Benson easily beat Genesee County Sheriff\u00a0Chris Swanson\u00a0in the Democratic primary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

During a speech to supporters in Detroit\u00a0Tuesday night,\u00a0she said\u00a0she\u2019ll\u00a0work for Michigan voters if\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0elected governor in November.\u00a0\u201cWho do you want Michigan\u2019s leaders to work for?\u00a0\u00a0The people or the powerful?\u00a0\u00a0Well,\u00a0you all know who I work for.\u00a0\u00a0I will work for all of you and every Michigander in this state.\u00a0\u00a0Not the highest bidder.\u00a0\u00a0Not corporate interests.\u00a0\u00a0Not Donald Trump. You.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Benson is a Detroit resident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

El-Sayed beats out Stevens for U.S. Senate race<\/h2>\n

In the most watched contest of the night,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Abdul El-Sayed\u00a0defeated\u00a0Congresswoman Haley Stevens\u00a0in the Democratic primary for Michigan\u2019s open U.S.\u00a0Senate seat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a speech to supporters in Detroit\u00a0Wednesday morning,\u00a0\u00a0El-Sayed took aim at Republican Mike Rogers \u2013 who\u00a0El-Sayed will face\u00a0in the general\u00a0election: \u201cAnd so, Mike, and I know\u00a0you’re\u00a0listening, Mike.\u00a0\u00a0We are coming for you.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

With more than 60-million dollars in outside spending, the race is the\u00a0most expensive U.S. Senate primary in history.\u00a0El-Sayed beat Stevens by less than a percentage point.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Congressional primaries<\/h2>\n

Detroiters\u00a0watched two Democratic primaries for Congress yesterday.\u00a0\u00a0Representative Rashida Tlaib easily defeated\u00a0former state representative\u00a0Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolan in the 12th<\/sup>\u00a0Congressional District.\u00a0<\/p>\n

State Representative Donavan McKinney defeated incumbent Congressman Shri Thanedar in Michigan\u2019s 13th<\/sup>\u00a0District primary.\u00a0\u00a0Results show Mckinney won\u00a0just over half\u00a0the vote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

McKinney says\u00a0its\u00a0time for\u00a0a new style\u00a0of\u00a0politics,\u00a0because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0impossible for representatives to serve two masters.\u00a0\u201cYou\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0serve\u00a0the working\u00a0people and\u00a0the corporations\u00a0at the\u00a0same\u00a0time.\u00a0\u00a0You\u00a0have to\u00a0pick one, and so\u00a0I think the people\u00a0are\u00a0calling for petter and\u00a0I\u00a0thing\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0calling our legislators and our Congress to do things for them and not on\u00a0behalf\u00a0of the few, but on behalf of the\u00a0many.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

McKinney also supported ending federal aid to Israel.\u00a0\u00a0He says\u00a0Congress\u00a0should\u00a0focus more on domestic needs.\u00a0\u00a0Thanedar was seeking his third term in the U.S. House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other results<\/h2>\n

Incumbent Wayne County Executive\u00a0Warren Evans easily won his primary race to\u00a0win the right to run for another term as the Democratic candidate in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Proposal S, which provides additional revenue for the Detroit Public Schools Community District passed overwhelmingly, as did the Wayne County Public Transportation Millage.\u00a0\u00a0That measure will keep communities from being able to opt OUT of the SMART bus system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n
