The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/perseids\/\">Perseid meteor shower<\/a> peaks the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcr.virginia.gov\/state-parks\/sky-meadows\">Sky Meadows State Park<\/a> in Delaplane\u2014an <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/places\/sky-meadows-state-park-dark-sky-park\/\">International Dark Sky Park<\/a> located just an hour out of DC\u2014is great place to view it.<\/p>\n<p>While most of the grounds close at dusk and campsites are already booked for that night, there is a spot you can still go until 2 AM: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcr.virginia.gov\/state-parks\/sky-meadows#other_info\">Turner Pond<\/a> is the park\u2019s designated area for self-guided stargazing, with its own parking lot ($10 per car) plus a field for taking in starry nights.<\/p>\n<p>(In general, if you\u2019re looking for good stargazing, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/what-we-do\/international-dark-sky-places\/all-places\/\">Dark Sky Places map<\/a> that highlights locations with minimal light pollution.)<\/p>\n<p>If the Perseids are past your bedtime\u2014but you&#8217;re still intrigued by all things celestial\u2014register for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairfaxcounty.gov\/parks\/turner-farm\/intro-astronomy\/081426\">astronomy programs<\/a> at Observatory Park at Turner Farm in Great Falls. There are sessions on August 14, 18, and September 5 from 8:30 to 9:30 PM.
