Photo by Jon Kopaloff\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hayden Panettiere, star of \u201cHeroes\u201d and \u201cNashville,\u201d died at age 36 on August 16.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A 911 call referenced a possible overdose, but Panettiere\u2019s official cause of death has not yet been determined.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Authorities found no signs of foul play or trauma, and the investigation into her death is ongoing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Actor Hayden Panettiere, best-known for her roles in the television shows \u201cHeroes\u201d and \u201cNashville,\u201d died on August 16 at a residence in Greenville, SC. She was 36.<\/p>\n<p>Panettiere was found unresponsive by a friend, who called 911 at around 1:50 p.m., the Greenville Police Department said in a statement obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/hayden-panettiere-death-at-36-involved-no-signs-of-foul-play-report-reveals-12061083?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The emergency dispatch audio included references to an \u201coverdose\u201d and \u201ccardiac arrest,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/hayden-panettiere-suffered-apparent-overdose-was-unresponsive-as-advanced-life-support-was-administered-before-death-12061106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People<\/a> reports. However, Panettiere\u2019s official cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency responders attempted advanced cardiac life support, including CPR, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32 p.m. The Greenville Police Department said its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxcarolina.com\/2026\/08\/17\/police-actress-hayden-panettiere-found-dead-greenville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preliminary investigation<\/a> found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.<\/p>\n<p>Panettiere\u2019s father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death. \u201cIt is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,\u201d he said in a statement, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/hayden-panettiere-dead-actress-heroes-nashville-scream-1236674794\/\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her \u2014 and to the millions who watched her onscreen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Panettiere spoke openly about mental health, substance use<\/h2>\n<p>Panettiere had been open about her experiences with mental health and substance use in the years before her death. <\/p>\n<p>In her memoir, &#8220;This Is Me: A Reckoning,&#8221; published in May, she wrote about her experiences with <a href=\"\/health\/depression\/postpartum-depression\">postpartum depression<\/a>, addiction, and recovery, among other deeply personal aspects of her life.<\/p>\n<p>While promoting the book in an interview on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vs6x8VUGXCw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jay Shetty Podcast<\/a>\u201d, Panettiere discussed experiencing <a href=\"\/health\/anxiety\">anxiety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/panic-attack\">panic attacks<\/a> after the birth of her daughter and while filming \u201cNashville.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She also described turning to alcohol during that period. She later gave up custody of her child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was miserable. I was in tears all the time. Even though the alcohol helped my nervous system calm down, it is a depressant, so over time it made things worse, not better,\u201d she told Shetty.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Friends and co-stars pay tribute to Hayden Panettiere<\/h2>\n<p>Friends and former costars shared tributes to Panettiere following news of her death.<\/p>\n<p>Viola Davis, who worked with Panettiere in the 2016 film \u201cCustody,\u201d remembered her in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DcIiB7NFu3n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish the world had more time with you because I had a burning curiosity about who you were becoming. I saw this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes. Your tests became your testimony, and your testimony became your legacy. You will be remembered,\u201d Davis wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Brit Shaw, who appeared on \u201cNashville\u201d with Panettiere, also shared her memories on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DcIkNvJG2Y4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had this way of making you feel at home. From the moment I walked onto the Nashville set, she made me feel like I belonged. We had so many good times together, and I\u2019ll always be grateful for them,\u201d Shaw wrote.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is a developing story.
