It\u2019s not a planet. It\u2019s not a moon, either. It\u2019s a third thing we don\u2019t have a name for yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newfound object is about as massive as Jupiter and orbits a brown dwarf. That\u2019s an object much bigger than a planet, but too small to burn hydrogen and shine as a true star. The brown dwarf, in turn, loops around a star called CD-35 2722.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This star system is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10751-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the first known to host an \u201cexosatellite,\u201d<\/a> researchers say. They shared the discovery July 22 in&nbsp;<em>Nature<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team coined the term \u201cexosatellite\u201d for the new object because no existing word is quite right. It\u2019s not exactly an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/scientists-say-exoplanet\">exoplanet<\/a>,\u201d a planet around another star. Nor is it an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/scientists-say-exomoon\">exomoon<\/a>,\u201d a moon around an exoplanet.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The newfound \u201cmoonish thingy\u201d appears in center about halfway through this animation. Orbiting the brown dwarf is the newly discovered object that challenges naming.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An object orbiting a brown dwarf orbiting a star \u201cis so different from the structure of the solar system that all the words we invented to describe the solar system just aren\u2019t really working,\u201d says Kevin Hoy. He\u2019s an astronomer at the University Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He and others used the Very Large Telescope in Chile to observe the brown dwarf between 2023 and 2026. They saw periodic shifts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/scientists-say-wavelength\">wavelengths<\/a> of light emitted by the brown dwarf. This revealed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/scientists-say-gravity\">gravity<\/a> of a massive object must be tugging it to and fro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Astronomers have used the same technique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/century\/space-galaxy-exoplanets-solar-system#exploring-exoplanets\" rel=\"noopener\">to find planets around other stars<\/a>. But this is the first time the method has turned up what Hoy calls a \u201cmoonish thingy.\u201d That is, something orbiting a bigger something that\u2019s orbiting a still bigger something.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does that nested setup make the new object a moon? Hoy doubts it. \u201cIt feels so off,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re probably not going to get away with calling it an exomoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technically a planet?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new finding restarts an old debate about what counts as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/scientists-say-planet\">planet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists came up with the current definition of an exoplanet in 2018. The International Astronomical Union, or IAU, devised it. (The same group&nbsp;decided that Pluto is not a planet, but rather a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/scientists-say-dwarf-planet\">dwarf planet<\/a>,&nbsp;in 2006.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That definition lists a couple criteria for an exoplanet. It must be at most 13 times the mass of Jupiter. And it must orbit a star, a brown dwarf or the dense orb left behind after a massive star explodes.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"wp-block-sciencenews-inline-related-post alignleft\">\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/explainer-what-planet\">Explainer: What is a planet?<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under those terms, a Jupiter-sized object orbiting a brown dwarf is a planet. It doesn\u2019t matter that the brown dwarf then orbits a star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat kind of forces the companion to be a planet,\u201d says David Kipping. This astronomer at Columbia University in New York City did not take part in the study. But he\u2019s been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/hubble-may-have-spotted-possible-exomoon\">searching for exomoons<\/a> for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can argue about if the IAU definition is wrong or right,\u201d Kipping says. \u201cBut by the current IAU definition, [the new object is] a planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That doesn\u2019t sit right with Hoy. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel the same as what normal planets are doing,\u201d he says. And this system isn\u2019t the only oddball. In January, another research team shared hints&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/articles\/aa\/full_html\/2026\/01\/aa57127-25\/aa57127-25.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of a similar satellite around a brown dwarf in a different star system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking the solar system mold<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our solar system, there\u2019s a clear hierarchy of objects based on how they move. Moons orbit planets. Planets orbit our star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest moons, for instance, are Titan (orbiting Saturn) and Ganymede (around Jupiter). Both are roughly the same mass and size as the smallest planet, Mercury. But because they orbit planets, they\u2019re moons. Since Mercury orbits the sun, it\u2019s a planet.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"wp-block-sciencenews-inline-related-post alignleft\">\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/explainer-stars-and-their-families-white-red-brown-dwarfs-supernovas\">Explainer: Stars and their families<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019d be comfortable calling Mercury a moon if it orbited Jupiter and calling Ganymede a planet if it orbited a star,\u201d Hoy says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finding planet-sized objects around brown dwarfs around stars throws a wrench into that simple way of sorting objects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, Kipping says, \u201cnature doesn\u2019t [care] about how humans want to neatly bucket things.\u201d But finding things that orbit other things that orbit still other things suggests that we might soon find true moons around planets around other stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s exciting that we\u2019re definitely entering the exomoon regime now,\u201d Kipping says. \u201cEven if this isn\u2019t an exomoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inmi-source\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snexplores.org\/article\/cosmic-oddity-moon-planet-definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Science \u2013 sciencenewsforstudents<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The object orbits a brown dwarf that orbits a star.
