Friend runs barefoot through embers to save Fairfield man, firefighters save cat

(KRON) — A Fairfield man and cat narrowly escaped from a house fire with help from a neighbor, a best friend, and firefighters, according to family members.

Kevin Kukoleck was sleeping at home on June 29 when a neighbor began banging on his front door at 3 a.m. A fire had ignited at the house next door before flames rapidly spread to Kukoleck’s house, his niece wrote on a verified GoFundMe page. “Their house was on fire,” his niece wrote.

Kukoleck uses a wheelchair. His friend and in-home caregiver, Eric, sprung into action. “Eric was able to help get Kevin out of the house safely while racing barefoot through the burning embers,” the niece, Christa Kukoleck, stated.

Once firefighters arrived on scene, they ran into the burning house and rescued Eric’s black cat, named Wicked.

Firefighters were able to resuscitate the cat and it’s expected to be OK.

“We thank God that Kevin, Eric, and Wicked are all safe, but they have lost everything. Eric is an incredible friend who has shifted his life to become an amazing caregiver to Kevin. Kevin is a psychologist and has helped so many people through the years with mental health,” Christa Kukoleck wrote.
