McDonald’s has brought back one of its most popular menu items, but the demand and popularity is leading to unintended consequences.
Some locations are reporting depleted supplies of lettuce and other toppings after the national re-launch of the popular Snack Wrap, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The lettuce shortages have become so pronounced that McDonald’s has told franchisees in the United States to refrain from putting lettuce on McChicken sandwiches to help preserve supplies for the Snack Wrap.
Customers who were upset about the lack of lettuce on the McChicken were offered McNuggets or a McDouble burger as a substitute.
The restaurant says that the lettuce shortage issues have been resolved, and that shortages of other menu items and ingredients were temporary. The company noted that it expected an increase in turnout for the return of the Snack Wrap, but that customers showed up in greater numbers than anticipated.
“We’ve been blown away by the response,” the company said last week, days after putting the fan favorite item back on the menu.
The Snack Wrap left the menu in 2016, and fans have been clamoring for its return for the better part of a decade. The item is simple – a chicken tender with cheese and lettuce wrapped in a tortilla with sauce – but the low-cost and filling menu item has clearly resonated with customers.
Fans made petitions and organized to lobby for the return of the Snack Wrap.
“One of my main motivators that keeps me going throughout the day is my future plan of purchasing 4 snack wraps,” one person said in a letter to McDonald’s, showing just how intense the demand has become for the fan-favorite menu item.
So far, bringing the Snack Wrap back has proven to be a smart decision for McDonald’s. During a year in which visits and profits are down, Placer.ai says that traffic to McDonald’s was 11.4% higher on July 10 – the day the Snack Wrap came back.
The firm, which uses phone data to examine the patterns of consumers, noted that increases in visits were reported throughout the weekend at locations around the country.
