Report: Cubs eyeing D-Backs’ Suárez as 3B upgrade

Tom Ruminski

The Chicago Cubs are interested in acquiring two-time All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic.

The Cubs are reportedly looking to make an upgrade at third base. Rookie Matt Shaw currently mans the hot corner but he’s hitting .212/.285/.318 with four homers over 67 games this season.

The Diamondbacks indicated they’re prepared to wait closer to the July 31 trade deadline before deciding if the club will buy or sell, according to Mooney and Sharma.

Arizona moved back to .500 with a 50-50 record after sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series following the All-Star break. The D-Backs enter Monday’s action 4.5 games out of the NL’s final wild-card spot.

D-Backs general manager Mike Hazen and Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer are good friends after previously working together as members of the Boston Red Sox front office, Mooney and Sharma noted.

The New York Yankees are reportedly one of several other clubs that’ve inquired about Suárez, who could be the best bat dealt before the deadline.

Suárez, who can test free agency after the 2025 campaign, is third in the majors with 35 homers to go along with a .929 OPS over 98 contests this year. The 34-year-old won NL Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after back-to-back multi-homer games against the Cardinals over the weekend.
