The Starting Five of Jordan History: 5 Iconic Jordans

Basketball has its starting five, and sneaker culture has one too.

Ask ten sneakerheads to name the greatest Jordans ever made, and you’ll probably get ten different lists. Still, a few silhouettes will show up almost every time. Whether you measure them by influence, popularity, or lasting appeal, these five models belong in the starting lineup.

The Lineup Card

Point Guard: Air Jordan 1 “Chicago”

Every offense runs through the point guard, and every Jordan runs through the 1. The 1985 “Chicago” is where the entire line begins, pairing Bulls red, white, and black in a template the brand still runs plays off today. It set up everything that followed, which is exactly what a floor general is supposed to do.

Shooting Guard: Air Jordan 11 “Concord”

Michael Jordan played shooting guard, and the Concord is the shoe of his most dominant era. He debuted the patent-leather 11 during his 1995 return from baseball, turning a dress-shoe shine into on-court flex, and it remains the most beloved 11 of his championship years. When the Concord retroed in 2018, it became Nike‘s most successful launch ever.

Small Forward: Air Jordan 4 “Bred”

The small forward is the versatile wing who shows up in the biggest moments, and no Jordan captures that like the Bred 4. It’s the shoe tied to “The Shot” over Cleveland in the 1989 playoffs, black and Fire Red with the wings, mesh, and visible Air that made the 4 feel dangerous. Clutch and adaptable, it does a little of everything.

Power Forward: Air Jordan 5 “Fire Red”

Power forwards bring the aggression, and the Fire Red 5 is Jordan Brand at its most attacking. The 1990 design borrowed fighter-jet shark teeth, a reflective tongue, and a translucent sole, matching an early-90s MJ who was a force. It’s the pair that looks like it wants to dunk on someone, which is the whole job description.

Center: Air Jordan 3 “Black Cement”

Every team needs that anchor, and the Black Cement 3 is the shoe the whole brand is built on. Tinker Hatfield’s 1988 design introduced visible Air, elephant print, and the Jumpman logo, and it is widely credited with keeping Michael Jordan at Nike when he nearly walked away from it all. Without this foundation in the middle, there is no starting five to talk about.

That is the starting five. Origin, dominance, clutch, aggression, and foundation, each with its own role in the story. Argue the bench all you want, but this lineup takes the floor first.
