Michigan's Cason plans to enter transfer portal

Michigan guard LJ Cason plans to enter the transfer portal following former head coach Dusty May’s abrupt departure for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, he told On3’s Joe Tipton.

Cason, a three-star recruit out of high school, emerged as one of the nation’s top backup point guards last season before suffering a torn ACL in February.

The 6-foot-2 floor general averaged 8.4 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.9 rebounds across 28 appearances in 2025-26. He shot 40.2% from deep and 50.3% from the field.

The portal will open July 15 – five days after Mike Boynton’s official appointment as May’s successor – for a 15-day period.

A number of other Wolverines players have already committed to staying in Ann Arbor, including starting guards Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.
