AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – The superintendent of Amherst Regional Public Schools wants to chart a path forward as the reinstatement of a controversial school counselor draws outrage from the community.

Dr. Xiomara Herman spoke before parents and students during Tuesday night’s school committee meeting following a rally in opposition to the reinstatement.
Dr. Herman said she is committed to leading with love, transparency, and relentless focus on students and wants to address the long-standing gaps in how the school documents, communicates, and enforces expectations related to staff.
“This is not acceptable—for the educators who deserve clarity and support,” says Dr. Herman. “For the families and community who expect us to work with integrity—and most importantly for the students we are all hear to serve and protect.”
Dr. Herman says the district will release a new complaint and communication guide before the start of the school year. She says the fear of retaliation cannot be an excuse to avoid mandatory reporting—promising to rebuild trust by prioritizing student safety and transparency.
