Bradley Cooper Had Talks With James Gunn About ’Superman’ Role as Lex Luthor

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who’s seen the new Superman movie and had many, if any, negative feedback about the performance Nicholas Hoult gave as Lex Luthor. Looking back, Hoult was essentially the perfect actor to cast in the pivotal role, and is primed to be a key piece of potential sequels to Superman.

However, director James Gunn admitted he also spoke to another popular actor about the role, revealing that he had a brief conversation with Bradley Cooper about potentially portraying the villain in Superman.

James Gunn Details Decision Not to Move Forward With Bradley Cooper as Lex Luthor

While Hoult’s fit as Lex Luthor likely made Gunn’s decision much easier in the end, the co-CEO of DC Studios explained how things played out with Cooper.

During a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn explained what led to the decision not to bring Cooper further along into casting consideration for Superman, as ScreenRant detailed.

“I did talk to Bradley about it,” Gunn said. “We had a short conversation and at the end…I did want Lex to be someone that was more [of a] contemporary of Superman’s.”

Gunn’s desire to have a younger Lex Luthor makes sense, as he highlighted how important the character is to Superman, and specifically, “to the future of the DC universe.”

The director did have high praise for Cooper, though, admitting that the Silver Linings Playbook star would have been a “great” Lex Luthor.

“Bradley would have been a great Lex. I mean…Bradley’s great at everything,” Gunn added.

Although Cooper wasn’t cast as Lex, the 50-year-old actor did portray Superman’s father, Jor-El, following in the steps of a few other well-known actors to play the role. Nelson Leigh played the part in the 1948 Superman film, along with Marlon Brando in the 1978 film Superman: The Movie. Russell Crowe was the most recent name to play Jor-El, doing so in Man of Steel, which was released in 2013.

James Gunn Already Working on New DC Movie With ‘Major’ Superman Role

While Superman continues its box office surge after hitting theaters less than one month ago, Gunn is already gearing up for what’s ahead in the DC universe.

In a recent post on Threads, Gunn stated he was “sequel writing,” immediately leaving Superman fans excited about the movie’s encore. However, Gunn clarified that the current script is not the specific sequel to the movie in theaters, but that it will feature Superman in a “major role.”

“Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It’s not ‘Superman 2,'” Gunn wrote.

Regardless, after the success of DC’s latest superhero film, there’s no question that fans are excited about what lies ahead. Gunn has already spoken about Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, who had a cameo in Superman, as well as an upcoming Wonder Woman movie.
