EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A local business opened its doors later because of the heat on Friday.

“The Pizza Shoppe” in East Longmeadow opened at 4:00 p.m. on Friday instead of 11:00 a.m.

70 years of sweetness didn’t stop them from serving pies.

The owner did this to make sure his employees could be safe as temperatures continue to rise.

“The owner likes to close down for the heat just to keep our employees safe when it gets hot. It’s usually 20 degrees hotter than it is outside in the kitchen,” says Dan Laporte, General Manager of The Pizza Shoppe.

Those working in extreme heat are being reminded to stay hydrated.

They say to look out for symptoms of heat-related illnesses. This includes dizziness, muscle cramps, or weakness.

“The employees are very appreciative because the reason we close is to keep the place cool. So when they do come in… the kitchen tends to stay cooler… so they’re always appreciative and ready to come in when it’s time to open up,” says Laporte.
