It sounds as though Fantastic Four: First Steps star Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Ben Grimm in the new film, is more than happy with the superhero he gets to portray. In fact, it seems like he’d much prefer the role of The Thing over a few other actors who were cast in Avengers: Doomsday, particularly Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Comments on Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler
While it was surely nothing more than a playful jab at two fellow Marvel superhero actors, Moss-Bachrach’s comments to Fotogramas were translated from Spanish to English by MCU Film News.
In short, it doesn’t sound as though The Thing is all that impressed with Gambit or Nightcrawler’s superhero abilities.
“What’s he doing, taking cards… throwing cards at people? It’s ok. No disrespect to Channing Tatum, but there are better ones,” MCU Film News reports Moss-Bachrach said.
And then there were the translated comments on Nightcrawler:
“Teleporting kinda feels annoying, like Nightcrawler does it. It’s like teleporting 5 feet, 10 feet… that’s kinda stupid.”

While fans saw Cumming portray Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United, there’s only been a small glimpse of Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit. The actor makes a cameo as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, much to the surprise of fans.
So while the jury is still out, at least on Tatum’s character, they should get some clarity and be able to make a stronger opinion when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.

Among the names Marvel initially released as part of the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, Tatum’s was on the shortlist of the most surprising. However, it’s been a long time coming for Tatum in the Marvel universe, as ScreenRant revealed he originally auditioned for the role before production of the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand.
Gambit wound up being cut from the X-Men film, and when 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released, it was Taylor Kitsch who played the superhero role.
Tatum’s name then re-emerged with plans for him to portray the superhero in a solo movie and also appear in the 2016 X-Men: Apocalypse film, but neither came to fruition.
This all culminated in Tatum’s cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, and it’s essentially what made it so surprising. Now, Tatum is back in the role of Gambit, but how much he’ll be featured in Avengers: Doomsday is anyone’s guess.
