Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines are diverting flights away from Hawaii as a tsunami threat looms.
The state of Hawaii is under a tsunami warning on July 30 as a result of a massive 8.7 earthquake in Russia. That’s according to the National Weather Service.
As a result, travelers headed to Hawaii are, in some cases, finding their planes redirected back to the mainland.
According to KIRO 7, Alaska Airlines is “temporarily holding or diverting flights bound for Hawaii in response to a tsunami warning issued for the Hawaiian Islands and parts of Alaska.”
As a precaution, “some flights already en route to Hawai‘i are being redirected back to the mainland or diverted to alternate locations,” the site reported.
“We are monitoring a tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands and portions of the state of Alaska and assessing our flight operations. We are holding flight departures to the Islands on Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines.” the airline said, according to Hawaii News Now.
“Due to a tsunami warning we are offering a flexible travel policy to/from Oahu (HNL), Kona (KOA), Kauai (LIH), and Maui (OGG) if you would like to change or cancel your flight,” Alaska Airlines says on its website.
“Flights may be delayed or canceled. Please monitor your regularly. Sign up for flight notifications and we’ll notify you of any last-minute delays, cancellations, or gate changes on your flights by email or text message,” the airline wrote.
The policy affects travel to Maui, Oahu, Kona, and Lihue, HI. The affected dates are July 29 and July 30.
“We are monitoring a tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands and portions of the state of Alaska and assessing our flight operations,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement to KIRO 7. “Guests with travel to, from or within the Hawaiian Islands should check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.”
