The Toronto Maple Leafs traded forward Ryan Reaves to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday for defenseman Henry Thrun.
Reaves, 38, is entering the final season of a three-year contract that carries a $1.35-million cap hit in 2025-26. He tallied eight points and was a minus-15 in 84 games with the Leafs.
Toronto placed him on waivers for cap purposes in March, and subsequently assigned him to the AHL, where he appeared in three games.
Reaves is primarily known for his physicality and fighting, amassing 1,100 penalty minutes while scoring 137 points over his 15-year career. He’s also received four suspensions over the course of his time in the NHL, including a five-game ban last November after dishing out an illegal hit to the head against Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse.
“We’re excited to welcome Ryan to the organization,” Sharks GM Mike Grier said in a statement. “He will bring energy, personality, physical play and toughness to our group. He has been a part of many winning teams, and I witnessed firsthand the positive impact he can bring to a group when I was with the Rangers.”
Thrun, originally a fourth-round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in 2019, scored two goals and 12 points while averaging a little over 17 minutes of ice time in San Jose this past season. The 24-year-old Harvard product is entering his fourth NHL season, and will earn $1 million in 2025-26 before becoming a restricted free agent.
The trade leaves Toronto with approximately $5.33-million in cap space, per Puckpedia.
