NVIDIA Hits Huge $4 Trillion Milestone: How Did It Become So Valued?

Zane Allred

The tech giant NVIDIA has just hit a massive milestone, reaching a market cap of over $4 trillion, making history. But how did they achieve such an overwhelming value?

Let’s go to the beginning. Per their website, NVIDIA was “founded on April 5, 1993, by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem, with a vision to bring 3D graphics to the gaming and multimedia markets.”

Their first big breakthrough was the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in 1999. A GPU is a specialized chip designed to perform many simple calculations in parallel, making it ideal for rendering images, video, and 3D graphics. Today, that same parallel power also accelerates tasks like artificial intelligence training, scientific simulations, and cryptocurrency mining.

The masterstroke was the release of CUDA in 2006. A widely available software that lets a graphics card crunch numbers, not just pixels. Labs and hobbyists suddenly had cheap supercomputers, but their code now ran best on NVIDIA hardware. Every new scientific paper or crypto craze quietly sold more green-logo NVIDIA cards.

Culture did the rest. E-sports and streaming kept gamers upgrading, while remote gaming popularized cloud graphics. Most of all, deep learning breakthroughs in 2012 showed GPUs were perfect for artificial intelligence, igniting today’s generative AI boom.

Universities taught CUDA, Reddit buzzed about GPU builds, and TikTok creators filmed unboxing videos of their new NVIDIA products. Free marketing at a global scale. Demand for NVIDIA computing soared, and they already owned the toolbox.

Don’t just take my word for it, take NVIDIA’s. In their Timeline of Innovation, the company states,

“For more than 30 years, scientists, researchers, developers, and creators have been using NVIDIA technology to do amazing things. More than 4 million developers now create thousands of applications for accelerated computing. More than 40,000 companies use NVIDIA AI technologies, with 15,000 global startups in NVIDIA Inception.”
