Police are reminding residents about how to use a generator safely when the lights go out.
They recommend purchasing a generator that has been approved by a testing agency and has a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician. Generators should be placed in a dry place outside and 5-to-10 feet away from the house.
Also, always make sure that the generator is cool before refueling, as fuel on hot engines can ignite.
