President Barack Obama Shares Wildly Controversial Take on Ketchup

Danielle Harling

When it comes to controversial condiments, ketchup ranks pretty high on the list. There has been debate for ages over whether or not the tomato-based condiment belongs on eggs, hot dogs, rice and other dishes.

And now, President Barack Obama is adding fuel to the fire with his shocking hot take on ketchup. During an appearance on the IMO podcast, which is hosted by his wife, Michelle Obama, and her brother Craig Robinson, he dropped this bombshell: “In my opinion, and this is controversial in my family, you should not eat ketchup after the age of eight.”

Even though he admitted that his take on ketchup “might be a little too Draconian,” he still felt strongly that it’s a condiment you should eventually “outgrow.”

“I have nothing against kids having ketchup on their burgers, ketchup with their fries. Even, which is hard for me to watch, ketchup on hot dogs. But at a certain, point you gotta kinda outgrow it,” said President Obama while appearing on the podcast.

Clearly in disagreeance with her husband’s opinions, Michelle Obama joked that  “everytime you say it, you make it younger and younger.” She also confessed that no one in her family is “following his lead” on the matter.

In a Reddit post featuring the podcast clip, many came to President Obama’s defense. Some of them even pointed out that his strong thoughts on ketchup could stem from the fact that he grew up in Hawaii.

“Hello, he’s from Hawai’i! Ketchup isn’t super popular on the islands as opposed to soy sauce, sriracha, and (surprisingly) mayonnaise,” one of them wrote.

Another person pointed out that President Obama’s stance is one that a particular food legend might have also had.

“Anthony Bourdain would agree with him, vinegar is what you would put on fries,” they wrote.

Will you be taking it easy on the ketchup from now on?
