Few motorcycles carry the historical weight of BMW’s original R80G/S Paris Dakar. It wasn’t just a machine; it was a revolution, laying the foundation for the entire adventure bike genre. Now, over 40 years later, Robert Sabel of Roughchild Motorcycles has taken that legacy and completely reimagined it. His latest restomod isn’t just a tribute, it’s a visceral, high-performance reinvention of the 1983 icon.

The Foundation: ST Bones, Dakar Spirit

The build began not with a weathered Dakar veteran but with a pristine R80ST from North Carolina, mechanically similar to the original G/S, and a perfect canvas. Roughchild extended the swingarm and driveshaft by 50mm for better handling and breathing room, then resprayed the chassis in Avus Black Glasurit, trading the factory’s semi-gloss for a rich, show-quality finish.

The Heartbeat: Boxer, Bored and Boosted

Underneath the classic silhouette lies serious performance. The drivetrain was stripped, cleaned, and rebuilt from the crank up. It now runs a Siebenrock 1000cc kit with Euro-spec high-compression pistons, delivering far more grunt than the original boxer could dream of. A reworked 5-speed transmission includes a taller fifth gear for relaxed high-speed cruising.

Suspension and Stance: Classic Looks, Modern Backbone

Öhlins forks, blacked-out and tucked behind vintage gaiters, anchor the front end. The bike features period-style indicators on custom brackets that honour the original design. Sabel’s upgrades always lean toward stealth: modern performance, classic disguise.

Braking and Cockpit: Control Meets Comfort

An R1250GS front hub and Brembo rotors are matched with R1250GS callipers for state-of-the-art stopping power. Up top, a one-piece GPS speedo and digital tach sit inside the classic headlight nacelle, illuminated by crisp white LEDs. Even the cockpit respects tradition while embracing the future.

Tank, Trim, and Texture

The Paris Dakar steel tank is genuine, finished in factory Alpine White and original graphics. A solo seat and rear rack recall the utilitarian function of its rally ancestors, while subtle touches like handmade yellow carbon fibre valve covers and a period-style 2-into-1 exhaust speak to the builder’s obsessive eye for detail.

Smart Fueling and Slimmed Weight

Fuel delivery comes via 38mm SmartCarbs, actuated by modern controls and paired with a reworked airbox for improved breathing. A lithium battery and upgraded charging system keep the weight low and efficiency high, powering a TwinSpark ignition system with no diode board in sight.

Lighting and Finesse

Even the lighting is upgraded without breaking the spell: a concealed LED headlight and Motogadget M-Wave relay animate the indicators with a pulse of modern flair.

From a distance, it looks like a time capsule from the golden era of Dakar. Up close, it’s clear: this is a purpose-built machine that respects its roots but isn’t afraid to run far beyond them.

This is the R80G/S, reborn, not restored.
