Stafford revisits back specialist, McVay says QB is in ‘good shape’

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford made another trip to a back specialist Saturday with an injury continuing to sideline him at training camp.

“What I don’t want to do is set a timeline,” Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters, according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. “I know he’s making good progress. He saw Dr. (Steven) Watkins again. … Everything is in good shape.”

Stafford, who’s dealt with a litany of injuries throughout his career, is week-to-week while nursing his bad back. McVay previously expressed optimism that Stafford will be ready for the regular season.

Nevertheless, Stafford is set to miss a third straight week of practice, which will include a joint session Tuesday with the Dallas Cowboys. McVay left the veteran’s status up in the air for the following week when the Rams are booked to practice with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett have been splitting reps at camp with Stafford unavailable.

The 37-year-old Stafford signed a revised contract with the Rams in March, securing $84 million over the next two seasons.

The Rams open the regular season Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans.
