It’s safe to say that some Target shoppers are in mourning.
The retail giant on Monday did away with price matching competitors such as Walmart and Amazon. Target will now only price match other Target locations or Target.com.
In a statement to Retail Dive, a Target spokesperson noted that customers “overwhelmingly price match Target and not other retailers.”
“We’re always working to deliver consumers outstanding value and give them confidence to choose Target, with our everyday low prices, affordable and quality-focused owned brands, incredible deals, free-to-join membership program, Target Circle, and more,” the spokesperson told Retail Dive.
Suffice it to say, some Target shoppers are not happy.
One shopper posted a short video in which she just shakes her head while “Taps” plays in the background. She captioned the post, “it was good while it lasted 😭.”
Another shopper filmed herself in the store when she learned about the new policy.

Just found out Target stopped price matching Walmart and Amazon starting TODAY. July 28. I’m flabbergasted. Betrayed. Emotionally unwell. What’s a mama supposed to do without those savings?!

The TikToker, whose handle is @forlizsakes, was carrying a child while leaving the store. She was out of breath and “flabbergasted” about the new policy.
“I am just leaving target as you can see and starting today they’re no longer price matching Walmart and Amazon,” she said. “I’m flabbergasted. Oh, my god.”
The TikToker didn’t get much sympathy. One person commented, “If you want the Walmart price, shop at Walmart.”
Over on Reddit, shoppers had mixed reactions.
One commented, “And like that Target is going to die out. People already prefer to buy online and price matching was only reason to be okay in person.”

Another wrote, “Walmart did the same a long time ago and it was easier on employees to keep from having to deal with people trying to price match fake ads or random 3rd party sellers.”
But when someone suggested just buying the cheaper product at a store other than Target, someone else argued that it’s easier said than done.
“I live in Manhattan. There isn’t a Walmart in Manhattan,” the Redditor commented. “I can’t just pick up and go to New Jersey or Long Island every time I need deodorant that doesn’t cost $20. Price matching Walmart at target was very helpful for a lot of people.”
Not anymore.
