The latest car to join Hyundai’s N performance line is the IONIQ 6 N. Building on the already excellent IONIC 6 sedan, this model uses dual motors to output up to 641 horsepower and 568 lb-ft. of torque. 10 years ago, we never imagined that Hyundai would release a sports car with a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.2 seconds and a 160 mph top speed, but here we are.
The instant-on nature of electric motors has given us some of the fastest accelerating cars of all time, and the IONIQ 6 N is no slouch. Other upgrades to this model include a new suspension system with electronically-controlled dampers, chassis enhancements, a factory aero kit, and custom-engineered Pirelli P-Zero 5 performance tires.
To add to the driving enjoyment on or off the track, the IONIQ 6 N includes a bunch of special performance features designed to enhance driving precision, responsiveness, and thrill. It includes N Launch Control for optimized traction and rapid acceleration, N Grin Boost for 10-second power surges, and N e-Shift and N Active Sound+ to emulate the feel and feedback of a traditional performance car using the surround sound system. If you haven’t heard what this sounds like, I suggest you check out Tim Stevens’ video demo with Hyundai N boss Joon Park.
The car’s upgraded battery management system preconditions for various driving modes like Drag or Endurance, while the N Drift Optimizer and 11-level adjustable N Torque Distribution offer customizable handling dynamics. Additional tools like the N Pedal for sharper cornering, regenerative braking up to 0.6G give drivers precise control and confidence on any road or track. N Track Manager is an advanced telematics system that lets drivers create custom tracks, record speed data, and even compare performance to a ghost car.
This car features the 84 kWh battery pack from the IONIQ 5 N instead of the 77.4 kWh unit found in other IONIQ 6 dual-motor models. While this should help somewhat with driving range, I think we’ll still see a significant drop in range due to the extra juice being sent to the more power-hungry motors. Of course, it all depends on how aggressive you are behind the wheel.
There’s no word yet on a release date or pricing for the IONIQ 6 N, but with the IONIQ 5 N starting at over $67,000, I’d expect we’ll see a similar price jump for this model. With a top-of-the-line IONIQ 6 Limited priced at $51,000+, I wouldn’t be surprised if the 6 N had a base price around $65,000.
