HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – A fuel transportation company was fined for violating regulations after a 35-gallon gasoline spill at a Hadley gas station.

In a news release from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), in September of last year, an estimated 35 gallons of gasoline were released onto the pavement and into a nearby storm drain during a fuel delivery at the Pride Station on 25 Russell Street in Hadley.

MassDEP says that no cleanup occurred that day, and a representative from GPM Transportation Company, LLC, a Virginia-based bulk fuel transportation company, didn’t report it until more than 24 hours later. After notifying MassDEP, they arranged for a complete assessment and remediation of the spill.

Massachusetts regulations require spill notifications to be reported within two hours. The company was fined $10,500 for the failure to promptly report the gasoline spill. In addition, the company is required to retrain its employees on spill response and notification procedures.

“Timing is everything when it comes to oil and gas spills because of the potential harm to public health, the environment and our local water systems,” said Michael Gorski, director of MassDEP’s western regional office in Springfield. “Promptly reporting these environmental releases is more than a regulatory formality. It’s a critical responsibility that ensures swift action to protect our communities and restore impacted properties effectively.”
