Visitors persist after toxic algae shut down swimming at East Bay lakes

(KRON) — Toxic algae are blooming in several lakes in the East Bay.

The East Bay Regional Park District shut down the swimming areas for a number of lakes in Quarry Lakes Park over the algae.

If you popped over to the marina at Quarry Lakes Saturday, you’d find people still using the water, despite a warning over toxic algae. But due to the algae, it is catch and release only.

There are red-labeled danger signs and closed gates, and no swimming or drinking the lake water, per officials.

“I didn’t know it was that serious,” said one visitor. “I saw the beach was closed but thought it was just today. It’s scary.”

All fish must be thoroughly cleaned before consuming all because of blue green algae.

The algae are blooming right now at several lakes at Quarry and will make people sick and could kill pets.

There’s no sign when the lakes can reopen for swimming. However, water-quality monitoring is done often so residents are asked to refer to the East Bay Parks website for updates.
