Is there a tsunami warning for Washington state on July 29-30?
There is a tsunami “advisory” for Washington state, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS also released expected arrival times.
The National Weather Service wrote on July 30 that the tsunami advisory “remains in effect for the coastal areas of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia from the Oregon/Cal. Border to the BC/Alaska border.”
Tsunami advisories “mean that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected or is already occurring. Areas in the advisory should not expect widespread inundation. Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest.”
There is a tsunami “advisory” in effect for Washington’s “outer coast, the Columbia River estuary coast and the Juan de Fuca Strait coast, along with much of the West Coast of the U.S.,” according to the Seattle Times.
The advisory was initially a watch.

According to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System, which is run by the National Weather Service, the concerns were triggered by an 8.7 magnitude earthquake that hit off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on July 29.

According to the Seattle Times, “The tsunami’s first waves are forecast to hit Washington state around 11:30 p.m., at La Push, Neah Bay, Moclips and Westport, before arriving in Port Angeles at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Port Townsend at 12:45 a.m., Bellingham at 1:10 a.m. and Tacoma at 2 a.m.”
The warning system lists tsunami warnings for Attu, Alaska – Samalga Pass, Alaska, as well as the Oregon/California border. There is also a tsunami warning for the state of Hawaii.
