Wasp numbers on the rise in Marin County, experts warn

John Ross Ferrara

(KRON) — Abnormally large populations of wasps are affecting areas of Marin County this summer, including Samuel P. Taylor State Park, California State Parks announced Saturday.

“This rise is due to a combination of mild weather conditions and increased access to water and food sources, which have supported a higher-than-normal population of yellow jackets,” California State Parks wrote on social media Saturday.

Rangers at Samuel P. Taylor State Park are marking wasp nests in the park to warn visitors.

“Park staff at Samuel P. Taylor are actively identifying and marking nesting sites and coordinating with pest control to reduce the chance of guest encounters,” California State Parks said. “We are also working to accommodate guests by relocating reservations when possible, especially in areas near known nests.”

Wasp safety tips from California State Parks and the Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District:

  • Do not disturb nests.
  • Avoid going barefoot outdoors.
  • Refrain from swatting at yellow jackets.
  • Use lids on sweetened drinks.
  • Keep garbage away from eating areas.
  • Inspect food before eating when dining outside.

“If you are stung by a wasp, monitor your reaction and seek medical attention if needed — especially if you experience swelling, trouble breathing, or signs of an allergic reaction,” California State Parks said.
