Yakima leaders move forward with plan to reopen Lions, Franklin pools

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima city leaders are moving ahead with a plan to bring two community pools back online in time for the warmer months.During a special meeting Thursday night, the Yakima City Council voted unanimously to set aside $230,000 to keep Lions Pool open through May and make repairs to Franklin Pool so it can reopen as soon as possible. The funding is part of a broader push that includes both public dollars and private support. Local lawmakers and community leaders have been working together on a plan to temporarily reopen the pools for the upcoming swim season. That effort is already gaining traction.City officials say private donors and local legislators have launched a fundraising campaign, raising $40,000 in just three days. That includes a $10,000 check presented during Thursday night’s meeting.Organizers say the goal is to reach $120,000 in private donations to help cover operating costs and extend the pools’ availability through the summer. The plan is not final just yet. The council is expected to vote on official budget documents on April 7 to formalize the funding.Leaders say more work remains, but momentum is building—and they’re optimistic both Lions and Franklin pools will reopen in time for families to enjoy this summer.COPYRIGHT 2026 BY APPLE VALLEY NEWS NOW.
