A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after his off-road vehicle rolled over, killing his 22-year-old passenger in Lowell, Vermont, Thursday night.
State Police say they responded alongside the Lowell Fire Department to a report of serious injuries after a single vehicle crash on Newton Road near Cheney Road around 10:23 p.m. and found a damaged 2021 Polaris RZR side by side overturned in the roadway.
The UTV driver, Randy Lemieux II, was evaluated by Newport Ambulance Service and reported no injuries, police said. His passenger, identified as Maddison Hayden, was pronounced dead on scene.
Lemeiux, of Lowell, was wearing a seatbelt, according to police. Hayden, of Woodbury, was not.
Responding troopers noticed signs of impairment while interacting with Lemeiux, however, and he was screened and taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Lemeiux was set to appear in Orleans Criminal Court on Friday afternoon on a charge of DUI with death resulting. Arraignment and attorney information weren’t immediately available.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, however police say speed is believed to be a factor. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash or have any information is urged to contact the Vermont State Police at 802-334-8881, or leave a tip at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.
